Michigan Players in the NBA

Is he a free agent after this season? I think that he’s still working under the 76 million deal with the Knicks.

Yes, unrestricted free agent

@sane1 if you find the highlight clip of him making that big 3, the color commentator (maybe Vince Carter?) says something like this right after “He’s a free agent this summer? He’s gonna get paid!”

At the time, Tim’s contract with the Knicks seemed absolutely insane, but he’s played into making it reasonable (credit the Mavericks for unlocking him in a way the Knicks did not - if you look at his shot profiles, his % assisted threes and % threes from the corners sky-rocketed when he got to Dallas - turns out he’s not a great shot creator!)

Also - I thought it was amusing that Tim was 12/24 from 3 from 3 against the Clippers (that’s good) in the regular season, and they apparently have not, between then and this series, considered how they may want to guard him.

In terms of the future, I tend to think there is no chance the Mavs don’t go all out to keep him. They’re capped out, so they can’t reasonably replace him with anything of similar value. I also tend to think that given how much better he has played since coming to Dallas, he’d want to stay. Playing as an off-ball shooter next to Luka is a good life.

I think that was the key too - Luka. THJ is likely still third in the scouting report despite his success and some of Porzingas inconsistencies. Luka facilitating everything along with a PG-type person (Brunson, Burke, etc) means that Timmy can mostly just shoot and score. Perfect fit.

Who would have thought that the best pro from that 2013 era roster would have been Hardaway, especially after his horrible sophomore slump? (I do think Levert has the potential to pass him, but he’s not there yet.)

Luka is 1, 2, and 3 on the Mavericks scouting report. He is their offense.

As far as the Mavs, they actually won’t be capped out right? I see them at 91M carried over. Add a first round pick for 2.5 puts them at 93.5 which gives them 17M or so to work with. And some fairly movable pieces as well. I could see them trying to convince someone to come in as the number 2. Don’t know if it will be successful but it’s kind of needed for them to take the next step.

That would presuppose they don’t extend Luka, which he is eligible for. They could time things to sign a guy before signing Hardaway and Luka (I think they want Hardaway back regardless). Regardless, Luka’s cap-hold is $25 million (ie, even if they sign someone prior to extending him, they need to “save” $25 mil for him)…so that room is mostly illusory. Hardaway’s cap-hold is $28 million ($11 more than he makes now, and obviously more than he’s going to sign for anywhere), and they’d need to renounce his bird rights to free that up to sign someone else…and I don’t think they’ll do that.

Long story short: if they want to extend Luka (they do), they could either re-sign Hardaway for whatever it takes our renounce him and free like $3 million to sign a FA with.

On a different note, the Mavs made a lineup tweak that I think has really topped out their offense - they replaced Jason Richardson (a mediocre shooter) in the starting 5 with Hardaway. Now, Hardaway always played with Luka a bunch anyway (about 60% of his minutes), but did play a lot with Brunson as well (about 50% of his minutes - the two are actually his most common floor partners). The tweak means 57 of his 70 minutes in these 2 games has come with Luka (81%).

What it means is that the Mavs now have 4 guys on the floor who are 38%+ three point shooters surrounding Luka. They can get away with it against the Clippers because of the Clippers’ experiment with point-guard-less basketball (6’10" Maxi Kleber seems to be their go to on Kawhi, which puts Dorrian Finney-Smith on George, which keeps Hardaway out of a stressful defensive assignment). The Jazz don’t have that top-end talent, but have a much deeper bench of guys that can hurt you - it will be interesting to see if the Mavs keep Hardaway in the lineup over Richardson there.

Chaundee finally got that paperwork in.

It’s pretty much THJr. from here on out. The Mavs have been greatly outplayed by the Clippers over the last two games and Tim hasn’t shot well. We’ll see if they can turn it around.

Mo had 13 points in a tuneup game for Germany. They will have to win a tournament with Russia, Brazil, Croatia, Tunisia, and Mexico to qualify for the Olympics. Our friend Robin Benzing is on the roster. I feel like that one is a fun what if of the Beilein era

He scored, yeah, but I expected way worse the way the tweet was worded lol

Same. He made a nice play. I was expecting Mo to get cooked

That’s not the definition of taking someone to school, not even close. Was actually good defense by Mo, just better offense at the end of the day.

Franz Wagner at 17 and Isaiah Livers at 49 in Sports Illustrated’s latest mock. In the article it did say Wagner could easily go top 10. Isaiah Todd also at 44.

Here’s a great video I thought I’d share. The creator does a lot of cool Michigan highlights etc.

Good game from Moe. Pretty sure he came off the bench.

Germany up 1 on Russia with 10 seconds to go, Mo has 12 points and gives them great energy whenever he’s out there. They should be avoiding OT as much as possible because as long as they lose by less than 6 points they advance. Though if they win they get the 1 seed in their group
