Don’t remember my first game. Been to quite a few memorable losses:
Blown out at Crisler by Flyin’ Illini last regular season game then the teams met in Final Four a few weeks later
Loss to Villanova for Natty.
Loyola Marymount loss in Long Beach.
Embarrassing loss to Xavier at home
Embarrassing loss to IU at home. I think Indiana scored last 28 points of first half.
Loss to OSU at home. Seemed season was unwinding but Coach Beilein turned it around immediately after.
Loss to North Carolina in Charlotte; Antoine Joubert and Garde Thompson senior season
Seen some memorable wins too:
North Carolina at home. Blowout victory
Glen Rice and the boys comeback victory against South Alabama in Atlanta on way to national championship. South Alabama had upset Alabama to reach the round of 32. Michigan also beat Xavier but I barely remember any details of the game
Fab Five blowing out East Tennessee State; also in Atlanta, after getting by Temple in first round; a forgettable affair. ETSU had upset 3 Seed Arizona. A game I was at but remember virtually nothing.
Another fun Fab Five game against Iowa State at the Palace
I’m forgetting a lot of home games probably. Road games are inherently more memorable imo.
I moved to Ann Arbor when I was 10. My dad and I had season tickets at Crisler for 1985-86, 1986-87, and 1987-88. Then we moved back to DC in 1989–the year they won it all.
My favorites were Gary Grant (“the general”) and Glen Rice, who debuted as a freshman in 1985. I always got a program, and I wish I had kept some of those.
A little bit late here but my first game was when I was 5 years old and “saw” Steph Curry drop 32 on us in his second collegiate game. I don’t actually have any memories from the game itself but I do remember my Dad taking my sister and I run out on the field at the big house afterwards. First one I actually have solid memories of was against Bryant in 2010-11 and at the time was our program record for 3 pointers in a single game. Some other memorable ones were the aforementioned 2018-19 UNC game, 2019-20 Oregon when Payton Pritchard went insane on us (and hit a phantom game winning buzzer beater, but they still beat us anyways), 2014-15 Illinois when Harbaugh addressed the crowd at half a few days after getting hired and we won an exciting game in OT, 2014-15 Wisconsin (national runner up that year) when Derrick Walton hit a 3 just before time expired to put the game into OT but we lost, 2022-23 Wisconsin when Hunter hit a 3 to put the game in OT and we won, 2021-22 Purdue. Also was at the aforementioned beatdown from Xavier and 2017 OSU loss. I think I need to find a better way to use all the space that’s storing all this information in my brain.
I was at that Davidson game and sat down on the old bleachers (yes, bleachers) and talked with Dell Curry about his son for several minutes. Even though Steph was just starting his collegiate career, Dell was very very proud of him.
Seth Greenberg screwed up big time by not offering Steph. VT was his dream school. It worked out great for Steph because he wouldn’t be Steph if he played at VT IMO.
I’m genuinely unsure. kind of like how ohtani needed the right set of circumstances - a threat to go straight to MLB from high school in order to convince the right NPB team to let him hit and pitch, and then a change to the posting rules to let ohtani prioritize selecting an MLB team that would let him do both - to prove the concept. I think it’s possible Steph would be good but wouldn’t be as impactful if he hadn’t had a series of circumstances that let him try out his approach?
I have a vague memory of Steph challenging Nik Stauskas to a three point contest after his backyard shooting videos went viral, but the the NCAA shutting it down or something. Anyway that was how I found out who Steph Curry was lol.
Perhaps, but with the development and the freedom Steph was allowed to have at Davidson, I’m not so sure he would’ve gotten that kind of freedom at VT.
I can’t remember if it was Dusty’s first or second year as HC, but I was at the game where we kinda fizzled out and almost let a game slip, but Tre went on the crazy run at the end of the game to propel us to a win. Would’ve never guessed that’d be the start of a 20 game win streak, but hey?!
This was a tough one against #1 Arizona. Led late, but couldn’t pull it out.
A lot of ball players on the court for that game:
Stauskas, Levert, McGary, GR3, Aaron Gordon, TJ McConnell, Nick Johnson, Kaleb Tarczewski, Brandon Ashley, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson
This thread is a lot of fun. My favorite ever live game was against Houston for Poole’s buzzer beater. My dad and I had a streak of like 7 years of going to tourney games and that one was the most fun, and the journey was even more fun. My dad picked me up from my apartment at 2AM and drove straight through - all 14-15 hours if I remember correctly. Had to make a 1 hour pitstop to sleep at some gas station because we would have crashed otherwise
We literally pulled into the parking lot as the sun was setting and got seated just in time for warm-ups. Certainly would not feel great about that whole trip if Poole didn’t hit the shot, but that feeling paired with extreme tiredness was something special. Just the pure euphoria in the Michigan section, I was hugging this random guy who it turned out sits/had sat just one row in front of us for years in section 207.
First home game was when we upset UCONN in I think 2010. I was hooked immediately. Favorite home game ever was when THJ went nuclear to win us the game against OSU in 2013. All the home games when I was actually in college meld together bc I was too busy starting chants and running around the student section. But I made a half court shot for one of those games so that one was fun New York to take home the B1G tourney in 2018 was a lot of fun, and a great send off for the Maize Rage core from my time in college. Went to San Antonio for the FF that year also, and the fanfare around that was so incredible. But I’ll never forget the feeling when Donte’s inferno began to rain hellfire on us. Most disappointing loss was driving to Nashville to watch John GROSS upset us on Timmy’s bday Not cool John, at least we got our revenge when we basically got him fired from Illinois after putting him on the map for the job in the first place.
Was also at the game against Kentucky where we got i think Aaron Harris-ed. That one was funny because we went to meet up with my dad’s good friend and at the time Michigan team doctor the next day. “So how was it all after the game last night?” “Dissapointing as it always is at the end of a season, but we had to stay back because the NCAA wanted to test one of our guys…” Didn’t get any further elaboration at the time, but see ya Mitch and thanks for the insult on top of injury NCAA.
Also, as I look back at some posts I am reminded that we really need to get this UMHoops ProAm on schedule here soon. I am as injury free as I’ve been in a while right now and ready get after it
literally making his NBA decision for him! And the dude didn’t even want to play basketball at all Him having another year in college was probably the peak basketball he would have ever played, but at least he got to hang out with Steven Adams for a bit. I bet that was fun
