Iffff we were to look for a coach who would be realistic targets?

i’ve also been amazed at the “we still dont have a coach” by day 4. Imagine hiring someone for your company taking less than 3 days, even if you had 1-2 weeks notice from said employee. I work for a well known company and most people cant complete an excel spreadsheet in 5 days let alone make a massive personnel decision

I would strongly disagree. Howard is Warde’s win-win candidate. Any rational fan knows Howard is a boom-or-bust type hire. He can hit it big, and Warde looks like he made a great hire. He can fail, and the rational fans know Howard was a good risk that didn’t pan out.

If you want to argue on rational vs. irrational fans, sure. That’s a whole different argument though.

This is a true no-brainer and great situation for Warde at this point. I don’t agree at all with being in a tough spot.

It’s not even that he’s a “good risk,” it’s that he’s one of our own, who will put butts in seats. All defensible reasons to make the choice.

There’s a portion of the fan base that is convinced that if we just “fire the money cannon” we can land whoever we want. Those fans are consequently almost always disappointed.

If you are asking me, at this juncture I don’t know enough about how things have been handled to offer an opinion. There is so much that has gone on that is unknown. But I’m more practical when it comes to opining on matters that I know little about.

Perhaps down the road someone will offer a detailed account of how this hiring was processed. And if it’s someone I trust and someone who is committed to detail and being accurate, we can revisit the question.

i think this is half right. you certainly can’t write a blank check and have to understand the context for what your AD will actually do given the history

that said you can offer 6-7-8 million to Stevens, Donovan, Wright, Bennett and whoever else. You either hire a great coach and solve problem for 5-10 years or drain the competitions budget.

That’s why people like him get paid tons, and people like Beilein keep secret their intentions until everything is clear and set – we fans aren’t the most reasonable people.

I have a hard time believing Warde decided to delay an interview with Howard for 3 days just to get his buddy’s buddy a raise. Maybe that’s not quite beyond the pale, but it seems to me that Warde wants to keep the job he has and knows expectations are high and all eyes are on him right now.

That is fair. Thank you

If Juwan fails because he’s obviously ill equipped for job or if he quits after a season, reasonable fans will blame Warde. He should be able to tell that much. If he fails by not winning as much as expected, then it was a reasonable risk that didn’t pan out.

You won’t drain your competition’s budget. Boosters will come up with the difference. We got a lot in donations after we hired Harbaugh.

boosters have a finite number they are commiting to a program, by putting their assets at risk they have to invest more money, making their next donation incrementally less likely to happen

at schools that dont have big football program budgets like virginia or villanova, making them going deeper into their pockets makes them less rich today than they were yesterday.

harbaugh was different as he was a new coach entering a program that was in downtrend

Even if that worst-case sceneario happens, oh well. Still went for the highest ceiling hire.

You can always get a Shaka or a Cooley. I’m okay if he can’t 100% tell if Howard is equipped for the job but wants to risk it. I would personally have no issues whatsoever however Howard plays out. Given the situation and timing of all this, to come away with Howard is him making a great choice IMO.

Do you know for a fact that this wasn’t done? Or are you guessing?

i dont i just hope it was. as it would be nearly a 50-100% salary increase for most of them.

Just like Cooley didn’t make a ton of sense from either side, Howard might be too appealing from both sides not to happen. For UM, you don’t have a home run guy if it’s LaVall or Shaka, while Howard is universally known, loved, and respected as a coach, and you get to bring back all of the past era glory in the safest package. Nobody is knocking you for giving Howard a chance and you can give LaVall a few more years to grow or always get a guy like Cooley. From Howard, you get to be a head coach, at your alma mater, and you have college age sons you can coach and be around.

I’ve heard its Howard (no surprise) or Donovan (surprise). Any insiders care to chime in on if Donovan is a serious candidate still?

Where, when, and in what context did you hear Donovan?

We don’t want to be wasting our (or prospective coaches’) time. Guys like Wright and Bennett are huge long shots. Sure, send a feeler out from your search agency, but don’t expect a positive response. You also don’t want to give other coaches the sense that you’re settling on them.

IMO, this is similar to the report from last night. Seemingly down to one serious candidate now, so why not put your name out there on it first in the (likely) case you are correct.
