Iffff we were to look for a coach who would be realistic targets?

CBS has had him listed as an expected addition to Kentucky’s roster for next year, in their Top 25 and one, for the past couple of weeks.

If he holds off long enough on making his decision and Howard is hired, however, I’d say it’s a legitimate possibility.

I don’t think that’s who he is…

Hire Howard today, get Jaden on an official. Call Jalen Wilson, tell him that him and RJ Hampton can start at the 2/3 together next year and play 35 minutes each. Sounds like a beautiful and not at all impossible plan to me

For not being a Blue Bood team, it sure does feel like it now. My how the bar has been raised! I think we’ll see great things for UM hoops in the future!

FWIW Jalen mcdaniels was named after jalen rose. Also here’s a quote from jaden last year

“He’s my mom’s cousin and I’ve known him my whole life. I used to go to games and watch him play. When he went to Seattle, I would go to all the home games and he’d take me to the locker room and show me around.”

looking at juwans time spent in different regions of country

grew up in chicago (18 years - had an off season home here) and obviously 3 years in michigan

Miami - 9 years
Washington DC- 7
Houston - 3
Denver - 2
Dallas - 2
Portland -1
Charlotte - 1
Orlando - 1

He has ties to at least a couple of major recruiting markets in Chicago and DC. With some solid roots in Miami and Houston as well

Playing somewhere does not constitute recruiting connections. I am guessing the main 2 areas he would bring ties too are Florida(from his sons) and chicago(his son and obviously his deep rooted history).

agreed, but things like knowing neighborhoods, area of cities, culture, putting on basketball camps, being a face in a community, a network generally is better than nothing even if it isnt knowing high school coaches, ect

True, but I still like it better than a candidate that spent his whole life in the same region of the country, especially if it’s far from Ann Arbor.

He’d have connections in Michigan since everyone knows him, wants to know him or love him by default without knowing him thanks to his past. The people I know that are plugged in AAU in Michigan want him fwiw. People connected to The Family (EYBL) and REACH (Adidas) in the state. He’d have connections in Chicago and DC thanks to growing up there and then living in DC for a time. His foundations are based in those cities as well. And then Miami as well since his sons played for a powerhouse high school in the state and Jett, the youngest plays for a powerhouse EYBL team from Florida. Jace, the 2020 plays for Mac Irvin Fire in Chicago.

These “connections” aren’t as surefire as Penny Hardaway’s though. I don’t like that people are comparing him to them. Juwan is such a wildcard all things considered. Sooooo many unknowns to him because he’s never coached in college at all. Not even the fact he’s not been a HC. This could be a disaster and all the facts were in front of us to see.

The thing you have to hope for is that all these nba guys and aau guys pushing for him actually follow through and support him by encouraging kids they are tied to heavily consider um. Mike Miller is a guy who had a very similar career to juwan and extended his career much like juwan by being well connected in the nba and a good mentor for young guys. He has turned those connections and his ability to relate with players into being an absolute monster on the recruiting trail. Penny landed the Memphis kids, Miller is the one that land the national kids. Hopefully juwan could do a similar job at um.

A Charlie Weis situation is not completely impossible, but basketball operation is not as complicated as football, and the differences between college and pro are much less. Ewing, so far, is not a disaster in Georgetown, finished 9-9 in big east, ahead of Providence and Butler.

Ewing has not done well on the recruiting trail. His personality does seem a lot dryer than Howard though. He also is further removed from his playing days in the nba than Howard too.

Howard is charismatic and energetic. I would expect he’d be an above average recruiter without considering his profile. Given who he is I think he could become the top recruiting head coach in this conference rather quickly.

Records don’t always tell the whole story though
gtown

Butler was about thirty spots ahead of them, they just happened to have horrible close game luck (280th).

Record does not tell the whole story, but any single metric does not either. I was not arguing that Ewing is a better coach than Jordan, but Ewing certainly did OK as a 2nd year head coach, and was no where near a disaster.

Webber has zero credibility and I trust nothing he says about anything. But I still want Juwan anyway

Nothing is ever surefire. I just don’t get the risk aversion to Juwan, the upside is there to justify whatever risk there is to a guy who’s under consideration to coach the Timberwolves.

I guess I just disagree with those who’d rather have an experienced, program manager type as Dylan and Brendan advocated for. Give me a young upstart who understands modern, positionless basketball, shot efficiency and floor spacing any day. Add in the charisma and connections that Juwan has? Checks all the boxes for me.

FWIW Juwan is a Mac Irvin fire alum and Chicago st head coach lance Irvin retweeted this

I think it is safe to say Juwan would have us in STRONG with that program

Georgetown was clearly a program in decline when Ewing took over. Here’s an interesting article about his hire and the situation there at the time.
