But, again, they had three (media) timeouts in that bad stretch, and they didn’t seem to help. Fans never seem to say things like “they should try to get a kicked ball here to get to the under-8.”
Call a timeout when you see something you need to fix, when you have a coaching point that can’t wait, etc. Don’t call a timeout just because the other team went on a run. Basketball is a game of runs.
I do think there was one time a timeout would have been nice – Faulds should have been screaming for one as soon as he caught the rebound. Perhaps he was, and the officials gave the foul instead.
IMO there’s nothing at all to take away from this game. Refs made sure of that. Hate that they fell apart; glad they recovered. That’s progress at least.
Can I see the research on that? I just don’t buy it, one, having played, and experienced the difference they make, and two, the fact that coaches husband them like they are made of gold. I don’t think a coach who believes in his coaching would agree with that and would find any stats on that suspect. But I’d like to see the research. I also would like to see if that holds true if you select for any subset of elite coaches, top 20 teams, etc - I really would suspect that not all coaches’ timeouts are of equal value. Do you honestly think Coach K would tell you that if you took his timeouts away except for diagramming a key play, it wouldn’t make a difference?
(hey, I responded to you down here, so I won’t double up - it did seem like the team was flat out mentally melting down - and I also would be curious if timeouts have more or less value to young teams - I definitely was wondering if Faulds tried to get the TO, I was certainly wishing he had hot potatoed the ball to someone else)
Agree with this. Thought team was toast after Dickinson fouled out and how the offense looked with him out earlier in the game. In the context of that and how this season has been, big shots and big win from Jones and Houstan.
Well, I think UM responding when we were down by 7 late with Hunter and Moussa fouled out was a real positive, and definite progress, given how we’ve responded in these situations earlier in the season.
Glad to have the win and yeah, I think after the past 2 games everyone feels like this is a comedown of sorts.
HOWEVER, the refereeing absolutely destroyed this game. Guys were tentative and scared to play their game, lineups that should never see the court yet they did and ended up playing a pivotal role. I’m of the opinion that if this game had non insane referees it would’ve been a bit more comfortable. I don’t think Hunter, and definitely not Moussa, ever got into their rhythm.
Very happy that Devante stepped up after Moussa went out as he had some strong takes and those 3s by Twill and Caleb were so timely. Needed the win and got it so if nothing else at least we can move on.
I had no faith that they were going to win that game.
They have soooooo much to work on but I’m just glad we have something to root for still. That was knife in the coffin imo.
Still disturbing that they somehow blew it after ralllying. Team has no luck / consistency.
I just wish they could get some consistency out if a young guy outside of Houstan.
All the young guys want to step up so bad that they force stuff/ do silly things on the regular. We just need to play smarter and cleaner.
That starting 5 could be very competitive if they develop some chemistry. Now that Caleb is ready to go it’s just about playing smart and getting the right looks.
We did get a little benefit from the overbearing reffing, too, though, don’t forget. They had to play some weird lineups - and Boo’s 2nd foul, in particular, had a big effect on the game.
