Game 16: Michigan at Minnesota Open Thread

yeah at some point you gotta make Oturu prove he can pass out of the double. if he makes a couple of the right reads, then go back to singling

I guess our freshman bigs next year will get a lot of playing time.

At work wtf happened? I got a break at 3 figured I’d catch the last 3-5. Definitely uneasy feeling for this fan , thought they’d get their first road win for sure…when they jumped out 30-19 I was feeling pretty good that they’d settled back in. Ouch

Minnesota absolutely deserved more free throws, but that discrepancy is laughable. We didn’t play THAT soft. Every time Minnesota initiated contact there was a foul.

We started the game shooting really hot. Franz stayed pretty hot–no one else could make a shot. Some porous second half D and poor end to the 1st doomed us.

A lot of the players need to set up their games. Although Wagner nailed 3s, he missed some easy layups. Teske right now, seems discombobulated. At times he has careless reach in fouls, finishes weak at the rim, and looks to have lost his confidence on defense.

We are just a poor defensive team. We are the elite at taking away 3’s but bad at everything else. Teske went from being a really good defensive player to now getting beyond abused by seemingly all the good bigs in the conf. We force no TO’s and never make it uncomfortable for the other team. Pretty disappointing and I don’t understand how you can continually make no adjustments.

Also, at the is point, Nunez and Castleton’s playing-time is just setting minutes on fire. I know the bench is already short without Livers, but those guys are walking turnovers and liabilities on defense. Holding my breath every time both of them keep the ball for longer than a beat

Really hope Livers is back soon. The offense misses him in a big way.

Yeah, Teske reaching in is a troubling development. Like, where did that come from?

I’ll defend playing Castleton a bit. He’s adequate on defense, looks like he’s close offensively, and we don’t fall apart with him out there. Not sure what Nunez gives you right now, though.

He actually would reach in quite often last year, but quite successfully. Now it’s hurting us.

I know Howard said he was stubborn in regards to double teaming the post, but in a game like today, how would that not have been the best strategy? Oturo uncontested at the rim or someone else on the perimeter?

Perhaps that’s why I don’t remember it! And we hedged screens a lot, so my memory tends to highlight Teske moving his feet remarkably well laterally for a big.

Although Michigan lost a key player in Matthews, this roster seems more suited to play in a pack line defense, especially Teske, in which there was always some sort of help. But in natural iso situations he is getting roasted.

Yeah, it’s a bit of a puzzle tbh. Hope the boys and coaching staff can work through this. Definitely hard to lose a scorer like Livers and remain elite. I’m trying to temper any sense of panic here.

Giving him 10 minutes in the first half and 0 in the second speaks to disorganization and lack of a plan.

No road loss this year to a school that does not start with the letter ā€œNā€ is going to panic me.

Agreed. Castleton can at least provide a few spot minutes here and there. Nunez is just setting minutes on fire.

I don’t think you have to double every possession but we are letting these bigs settle in every game for the first 10 minutes. I’d like to see us mix up our looks early so they don’t get their confidence going like crazy. Today’s game was winnable if we didn’t let Oturu get going with the way Minnesota was sleepwalking the first 15 minutes.
