It is pretty funny the value people place on shooting and Only shooting. He can shoot...........so what
What could Jon Diebler do but shoot?
Question - where is Jon Diebler now? Case closed
The guy said that the NBA would “give him a shot” if he could shoot like Stauskas, not that he’d have a career in the NBA. Diebler was a second round pick. He got a shot. Even though he was just a spot up 3 point shooter at OSU.
Lol. Ballgame, folks.
If by “getting a shot” you mean never playing a single second in a regular season NBA game, then I guess you are correct. As Hail says, lol.
I disagree, there aren’t very many spot up shooters in the league. The majority of “just shooters” in the league come off pin down screens from the baseline and pop up to the elbows or top of the key from 18-24 feet. Korver and Reddick are prime examples. Nobody sits in the corner in a stagnant position waiting to just catch and shoot. Nba defenses are simply too athletic for that
Steve Novak has had a decent NBA career while sucking at quite literally everything besides shooting....... It can definitely be done.
Of course it can be done, but what is the likelihood? Jordan Morgan can be a 10 time all star in the NBA, but again, what is the likelihood?
JMo, as much as I love him, did not have a skill at 6’7" that would translate to the NBA level. A guy who can shoot like Nik (or Novak) does. That’s why a great spot up shooter will draw NBA interest, while JMo would not. Not a very apt comparison.
Shooting from a stagnant position doesn’t translate to the NBA. You have to be able to come off screens at a minimum.
Is there any subject Matt can't turn into an argument?
I think the better question is this - am I allowed to have an opinion that isn’t pro UM or paints a pic of UM players, coaches, recruits that isn’t flowers and candy without getting scrutinized?
Bonner - I will concede he is a simple catch and shoot player. But we’re talking about 1 player where their only skill is catch and shoot. Green is a top 10 defender in the league that also comes off screens.
As LAW pointed out, if Robinson is no better for us than Diebler was for OSU, or Alford was for Indiana, he’d be well worth the scholarship. I frankly could care less what kind of NBA career he has, if any. I’m not going to worry about his other skills before he’s even played a game for us, any more than I worried about Doyle’s rebounding after one exhibition in Italy. Skills and players develop. To think that Robinson right this minute is as good as he ever can possibly be is a ridiculously pessimistic viewpoint, just as it would have been about Kaminsky 3 or 4 years ago.
So now we're suddenly assuming that Robinson can't shoot off of screens?
So now we’re suddenly assuming he can?
I fail to see how you can assume that he can’t come off of screens and shoot unless you’ve actually seen him take shots while coming off screens and seen him miss them. Until then we still don’t know, and you can’t say that he is unable to. You assume these things with no backup, and then if anyone else makes an assumption you are the first to jump on them for doing it.
I think many of you are missing my point. My point is that Robinson is most likely only as effective as the creators on the team. Generally speaking, catch and shoot players get open looks in 1 of 3 ways in a half court set - double teams on a post player, dribble penetration and kick, down screens for the shooter. If we lose Caris without a similar level creator, things could get a bit more challenging for a guy like Duncan when he’s forced to create individually.
It really depends on who the next point guard is IMO. If we get someone like Thornton, who (at least from what I’ve seen in highlight reels) can find those corner shooters, I think DR can be very effective as a catch and shoot guy. I also think that he will have issues creating for himself, but I don’t think we should already write him off as unable to shoot off screens before we’ve ever seen him.

You assume that he can without backup. So basically you are guilty of the same thing you accuse me of, on other words, you appear to be a hypocrite as it relates to this dialogue.
By the way, not once did I claim Robinson does not have the ability to catch and shoot off of screens. You are making that assumption, not me

Well said, that’s really my only point. I’ll reiterate, I think Duncan can be a very nice supplementary player in a Zak type role when surrounded by creators.
I think Walton will continue to improve as a creator next year, and I think Chatman will be an effective passer. Two years ago, the only guy who could create much for others off the bounce was Trey - we did OK that year. Of course I’d be happy to land Dozier and it would make us that much better - no argument there. But if Robinson is “only” Diebler for us, I’ll easily take it.

I really don’t want to keep pushing this, but I never did assume DR can shoot off screens. You assumed he couldn’t, and I simply said “So now we’re suddenly assuming that Robinson can’t shoot off of screens?” I don’t know if you comprehended that differently than I intended, but I did not mean to say that he CAN, just that we don’t know yet.
