Funny feedback from media day

Just like I thought, Michigan threw away a scholarship on a reserve…

The comments about Aubrey Dawkins dunking skills were pretty cool too. I sure hope he gets enough minutes to really show us his stuff. Note that DJ Wilson also got a shoutout.

It is pretty funny the value people place on shooting and Only shooting. He can shoot…so what

Well, if DR is 6-8 and can shoot the lights out, the staff will find a place for him on the floor. If he can shoot the 3 ball like Nik the NBA will give him a shot. But seriously, it’s all talk until he proves himself! You have to be excited by the teams comments…they’ve seen a few first round shooters!

Chazer - the only similarity between Robinson and Nik is shooting ability from a catch and shoot standpoint. Nik was far superior at the same age in terms of ball handling, passing, and shooting off the bounce. Nik was on a different stratosphere from an overall skill perspective. Shooting, without more, is really only as good as the creators on the team. When players like Duncan are placed in spots where all they have to do is catch the ball and shoot, they look great. When the creators leave, and players such as Duncan/Zak are forced to create, they often get exposed.

MattD - chazer literally said “If he can shoot the 3 ball like Nik the NBA will give him a shot.” and he did nothing else to compare the two, yet you somehow make up that he said that they have similar ball handling, passing, and shooting off the bounce. Tell me exactly where chazer compared anything other than shooting with Nik and DR, and I will concede in my argument.

Last time I watched a basketball game at any level, the players scored points by shooting the basketball through the basketball hoop. Yes, maybe a dunk or layup is not “shooting a basketball” but c’mon man MattD! You do not know how Duncan Robinson will perform once he takes the court next year, do you?

Not looking for any conflict, just referring to what his teammates said…he can shoot the ball. Best on the team, that’s good company in my book!

What could Jon Diebler do but shoot?

Steve Novak has had a decent NBA career while sucking at quite literally everything besides shooting… It can definitely be done.

Question - where is Jon Diebler now? Case closed

Well, he made the NBA comparison based on shooting alone , which is downright silly in my opinion. The point is the NBA will not give him a shot if all he can do is shoot. The reason Nik is in the NBA now is because he is a multi faceted player that can create for himself and others. If you take away niks ball handling and passing he would’ve a 2nd round pick at best. When your only attribute is shooting off catch and shoot scenarios, and you can’t defend, that generally doesn’t bode well for NBA potential.

Two comments:

  1. If Robinson is as good of a college player as Diebler, I’ll be plenty happy and that will be a good use of the scholarship. Our offense is geared toward good outside shooting, so yes, getting shooters is important. And of course finding creators is important too.

  2. Plenty of guys make the NBA as just pure shooters. Novak. Danny Green. James Jones. Kyle Korver. Matt Bonner. Steve Kerr (going back a few years). None of those guys did anything but shoot open shots. I’m not predicting the NBA for Robinson, just saying that someone with his profile (6-8, great shooter, nothing else) can certainly make it. Clearly, Nik was more than just a shooter.

The guy said that the NBA would “give him a shot” if he could shoot like Stauskas, not that he’d have a career in the NBA. Diebler was a second round pick. He got a shot. Even though he was just a spot up 3 point shooter at OSU.

Guys - not saying that there isn’t value in outside shooting, because there is. I think Duncan would’ve been really helpful This year, where we have 2 guys in Walton and Levert that can compel help defense off our shooters with penetration in addition to a great passer in Chatman. I think it is much more difficult for guys like Duncan to be effective when the shots aren’t simple catch and shoot situations that aren’t open shots or semi-contested. That’s why I’ve always maintained Robinson could be a really nice supplemental piece, but if you’re asking him to create his own, I think that’s outside of his comfort zone at this level.

Of course it can be done, but what is the likelihood? Jordan Morgan can be a 10 time all star in the NBA, but again, what is the likelihood?

Lol. Ballgame, folks.

JMo, as much as I love him, did not have a skill at 6’7" that would translate to the NBA level. A guy who can shoot like Nik (or Novak) does. That’s why a great spot up shooter will draw NBA interest, while JMo would not. Not a very apt comparison.
