Evaluation Weekend: April 24-26

I hear you Dylan…but when evaluating players, especially UM targets, I will always view from the standpoint of fit at UM. And in Huerters case, at UM, I think he is a PG. Certainly, he can move over to the 2, but I’d wager a fair amount that Huerter is being recruited as the primary ballhandler(PG/1) in UM’s offense.

Semantics…

Was able to stream 2 full games of Huerter, and I’m with Dylan…no way Huerter can play PG at the high major level. Simply lacks the necessary ballhandling and lateral quickness to get good separation from a defender. When I watch him, he’s very similar to Duncan Robinson in my opinion. That’s not to say he’s a bad player, because he can pass the ball a bit, good shooter, and decent verticality…but certainly below average in terms of lateral agility and straight line speed. Would much rather have Goodin, Brown, Turner, Winston. We need guys that can break you down off the dribble and draw a secondary defender, and I don’t think Huerter has that type of ability. Good player, just too much overlap with what the roster already has. We need perimeter ballhandling and speed in a bad way, and Huerter doesn’t solve those issues in my opinion.

Goodin/Huerter or Brown/Huerter would certainly be interesting mixes.

I don’t think the proper question is the fit at UM per se, because we tend to play guys out of position in order to get shooting…the real question is whether it is an effective/good fit. You can force a square block into a circular hole and perhaps ‘force’ a fit…but is that the most beneficial thing? Just something to think about. Huerter at PG is not an ideal fit by any stretch in my view. Strictly a 2/3 in my opinion.

I think Huerter at PG in UM’s 2 Guard offense is a great fit. He’s excellent in transition, is very good in the P&R…UM does set a lot of pin downs, screen for the screeners, flare screens, etc. and Huerter knows how to get the ball to open guys. He may not excel as a 1-4 low create something out of nothing guy…but I’m fine with that.

Huerter is much more a 1 than a 3, IMO. Especially at Michigan, which what we are talking about here. At most other schools, maybe that isn’t the case…but I think he fits the mold a PG at UM and I think that is how JB is looking at him.

Just disagree. Think Huerter is good player, just certainly not a PG, and doesn’t really help us in the areas of need.

Huerter can handle the ball if needed but shouldn’t be the primary ball handler for your team. Essentially, he’s a bigger version of Stu Douglass. By his Jr. or Sr. year Beilein would have enough confidence to throw him at the point if there were no other options on the team.

Without getting too deep into comparisons/analytics…on a very basic level, Huerter is MUCH closer to Duncan Robinson than Nik Stauskas. I’m pretty sure most would agree. If Nik couldn’t play the PG (although he did create a lot in the halfcourt), I have a REALLY HARD time envisioning Huerter playing PG considering his handle isn’t half of what Nik’s handle was in HS.

No opinion on the Douglass comparison but I think the program’s well past the point where a Stu-type needs to pitch-hit at PG.

I don’t really see any sort of comparison to Stu Douglass. Huerter is a long guard that can flat out pass and shoot the ball. Never really thought of Stu as a great passer, or long.

…especially not when my hopes are on Goodin. Or Winston. Or even Brown being our next star PG.

Agree about the passing part, but Stu is 6’3 and Huerter 6’5…don’t know about wingspan. But its not like Huerter is Duncan Robinson in terms of size.

What I meant was that Huerter, like Stu Douglass, shouldn’t be the primary ball handler but is serviceable in that sense. I see Huerter as an Alex Ruoff type guard.

That makes more sense to me and I can see it. The two has some pretty heavy ball handling responsibilities in this offense and I think Huerter could definitely fit that spot.

I think Huerter can play point. Probably not full time Point as a freshman, but yeah I agree with you, he has the capability.
I think he’s a bit deceiving, because the game is so easy for him. Never looked like he was in a hurry. Head always up, willing passer, and already outstanding range.
I can’t think off anyone he reminds me of. I don’t find Stauskas or Robinson as good comparisons. If I have to go with a white guy, maybe I would say Kirk Hinrich.
I would love to see this kid at M.

My descriptor would be “efficient.” He’s quicker than he’s given credit for - lanky guys can look a step slower than they really are. He understands passing angles, when to bounce it, when to lob it, when to whip it. And he has a great looking shot with a quick, high release. He’ll be killer on the pNr.

Spot on take @sane1. His vision and passing was really impressive to me. Just the way that he can control the game without even holding the ball. Something that you can bet Beilein loved as he was watching.
