Damn forum is popping this morning. The future of the Oregon and Oklahoma basketball programs are looking brighter than Michigan’s currently. Isn’t that the point, to be improving programs? Yes beilein had 2 GREAT years but what about the other 7? Do they not count because he had 2 great ones?
He dislikes recruiting so much he has 2 top 66 players coming in on the ESPN 100. There’s nothing wrong with disliking recruiting I am sure a lot of coaches do. Those coaches realize it’s the lifeblood of a program though.
LA quick question if Levert had stayed healthy last year and they made the tournament but he went pro. How would that have changed this year? People would have felt better about last year but this team still wouldn’t have been good.
I’d be willing to bet a thousand bucks that you have literally ZERO ties to Detroit area recruiting…and I mean zero. Nobody would allow you anywhere near any legit D1 recruit…and yet you come on here speaking as if you really know something all in the name of defending a man you don’t even know.
Lol I love it. As a head basketball coach, if you don’t like recruiting that’s fine. But it’s responsibility as a very well paid coach to put a plus product on the court and we do not have that. Nor are we bringing in big ten quality talent next year.
I didn’t make a point about the quality of his recruiting. I refuted your completely made-up statement that he “prefers the enthusiasm and loyalty of players with no better options…”
Anyway, I didn’t say we should focus on 5-star recruits (even though I think it’s just wrong to tar them all with claims of corruption as you do). Four-star impact players with plus-athleticism should be our bread and butter.
We’ve had some success with lower ranked guys but at Matt pointed out, we’ve also had our share of busts… although it’s a bit unkind to call them all busts since if they had gone to the MAC or Horizons league, they might have had pretty good careers.
Exhibit A) Jim Harbaugh.
He’s not a “nice” guy. He’s blunt. Doesn’t butter things up. Pushes to the limits.
Fierce competitor that draws other fierce competitors.
Just have to point out that he inherited a mess. And he had 3 pretty darn good years, not 2. We were ranked 13, 10, 7 in the final reg season AP polls for 2012, 2013, 2014. Not saying the bad years don’t count. But let’s not short change him.
We recruit guys that we hope improve A LOT over their careers. Well, if they don’t, like the majority of our roster, you have a poor product on the floor and get blown off the court by good teams and even on our home court. That should never be acceptable. Beilein should be our coach now and next year. But if the 17’ class isn’t a great one, then something needs to be done about it. Poole is a great start to play with Simpson, but the win definitely needs addressed
Its debatable whether 2012 was a good year. No doubt above average, but depending on your preference, a first round exit to Ohio may disqualify a team from having a ‘good’ year.
He’s been here 9 years. It definitely was a mess, but it’s looking like it’s headed back to a mess. We rely far too heavily on 200 ranked guys that the majority of the time don’t pan out. We were great fit to s few of them becoming great. Look at all the ones that haven’t over the years, hell look at our current roster and you’ll see a few.
I did not leave out the fact that he had been to a final four. I very clearly stated that he had been to one (exactly one) final four–back in 1994. Perhaps you should slow down and read a bit more carefully.
So the fact that he won 2 mountain west tournaments makes him a great coach? He has not won any at OU (in fact, he has actually been worse in the B12 tourney than JB has been in the B10 tourney). He didn’t win any at U of I. He didn’t win any at Florida. He didn’t win any at K State.
Does Kansas not count their conference championship seasons as good years when they get bounced early in the tournament? I suppose we all have difference standards. 2012 was a very good year in my opinion. I agree with everyone that we need to land a couple big time players sometime very soon. But that doesn’t diminish the accomplishments he has had.
We rely HEAVILY on Dawkins, MAAR and Robinson. Two were ranked 300+ and one was d3. Now they are serviceable players but are they really going to make noise in a big ten season. No. I mean you can’t possibly not we how this recruiting. Doesn’t work for a steady program.
I agree. Both of those guys are terrific players but I think some reservations apply because neither is a plus athlete. Could have difficulty adjusting to high major play. If they can add a long, athletic wing with a great motor, they might be one halfway-decent big man away from being a good team again. Big ten contender though?
To me, the accomplishments are outweighed by the bad years. Including what the future is looking like. There is potential with this loaded 17’ class, but our history shows we will continue to avoid high ranked players for the most part and try to find the hidden diamonds. I mean for the lords sake 3 of 4 guys coming in in 16’ are career backups. With no stars that doesn’t bode well
Uh, we hired his high school coach and recruited his childhood friends (who was one of our lowest rated recruits), and still almost lost him.
By the way, I’m fine with doing what we did, because it’s within the rules, but Rashan Gary is not the best example. Basketball staffs are far smaller than football staffs, and there are far fewer scholarships.
Lon Kruger last 10 years 8 NCAA Tournaments
John Beilein 8 NCAA Tournaments in his last 18 years
We still going to do this?
That’s the point. We have a roster loaded with career backups, 2 juniors who aren’t good leaders and guys who would only be decent in the Mac. I mean, how on earth can 6 centers for next year be explained. Especially that every single one would be a backup at 7-8 other big ten teams every year.
Don’t show him the facts man, he doesn’t care about those. He thinks that beilein is nice and that’s all that matters.
