This is the exact type of conservative, holier than though garbage I’m talking about. There is very big distinction between a kid with some swag/toughness/grittiness and a criminal.
Kruger might make some noise this year, but have you looked at the guy’s resume in its entirety?
He has been a D1 head coach since 82–ten years longer than Beilein. He has won exactly 1 conference title–a shared title back in 98 at Illinois. He has been past the sweet 16 exactly twice in his entire coaching career, with the last time being in 1994.
I can understand not wanting Beilein when Amaker was fired. But wanting Kruger instead? Head scratcher.
I would of taken Kruger over JB in a second back then!
It boggles the mind how people are totally fine with Harbaugh doing what is necessary (within the rules) to attract top talent after a long drift into irrelevance, but the same people accept JB’s rigid restrictions as the ONLY acceptable benchmark for “clean” basketball recruiting. There is a huge difference between recruiting “criminals” (as someone said above) and being a bit more deferential to the egos of elite players, the vast majority of whom are not “criminals”. Everything indicates that JB prefers the enthusiasm and loyalty of players with no better options than having to deal with the egos of elite players. That needs to change.
Re Dave Brandon: I’ve said it before, but let’s not forget that he was the one who started the meme that JB was welcome to be coach of Michigan for life. He probably assumed the same courtesy (naturally) applied to him. It didn’t, and his arrogance led to his demise. He works for a toy store now. Performance matters, especially when you are pocketing millions. I do appreciate that JB is a really great mentor to 15 guys but if that was the only qualification for the job, he wouldn’t be making millions. Most of that money ought to come from winning (or at least coaching defense).
And we would have 0 conference titles and have never advanced past the sweet 16!
Really Nostradumus?? Alum we won’t agree on very much on here. I’m just going to leave it at that
And you might want to look up Krugers resume again. You aren’t even close
“Everything indicates that JB prefers the enthusiasm and loyalty of players with no better options than having to deal with the egos of elite players.”
Is that why he recruited Battle, Booker, Blackmon, Winston, Kennard, Langford, McGary, Chatman, Thornton, et al? Nice narrative, though.
I have his resume right in front of me. Please tell me which statement is false? The conference title number? The tournament stats? Which one?
I like Chris Mack a lot. Another guy I would consider is certainly Buzz Williams. There are a lot of good signs at Va Tech and I can’t remember when they were last relevant. He did a terrific job at Marquette. Michigan could be quite appealing to a current 43 year old coach who wouldn’t be stuck in the ACC behind UNC/Duke/Louisville/ND/Syracuse/Virginia.
For one he has been to a final four! With Florida at that before Billy D! You tried to sway your argument by leaving that little fact out by saying he has only been to a past a sweet 16 twice. He also has conference tournament championships but that must not count. He has been coach of the year a ton and he has also coached in the NBA which was his biggest mistake leaving Illinois. He immediately made UNLV into a good program out there and has done the same with Oklahoma!
So in my mind Kruger would of been a heck of hire!!
It certainly reflects his priorities since missing on the vast majority of those guys. (And the fact that he did miss on his first-choice targets since 2012 doesn’t really bolster any argument about the quality of his recruiting – he evidently failed to “deal” with their egos.) I don’t want to call out individual players but a couple early commits for '16 were total head-scratchers, especially when this team seriously needs impact guys not projects.
If you had to buy a stock of Beilein or Kruger who would it be?
You’re funny - Kruger is known as a guy who dislikes recruiting a lot. The grass is always greener.
You should educate yourself about recruiting five star players.
Like Rashan Gary?
Sure he does
Hahaha WB!
This is hilarious - as if you have any type of knowledge about his recruiting practices. God you’re ridiculous.
Its seriously to the point where your contentions are ridiculous. You throw around blanket statements concerning ALL 5 star recruits…its the equivalent of recruiting racism/classism…lol
We could literally go 0-28 next year and your response would be ‘its just not an even playing field, the AD won’t allow JB to operate in gray areas, JB is a good coach’…its laughable
It’s not worth it anymore. Just ignore.
