Eating Crow: Revisited

Certainly not out of the question that it can be considered a good year, I label it above average. But to label it ‘very good’ is a bit extreme IMO

I guess I understand. But for me… I was a fan for the 13 years where we weren’t ranked at the end of the season and missed a ton of NCAA tournaments. We were bad a lot and mediocre a couple times. So dipping down from great to mediocre now is hard but our situation is just so much better. Again, the future could trend poorly. Just speaking of right now. Let’s beat IU today!

His friends were all top recruits!!! You act like Harbaugh offered no names. My goodness

For me, when ranked in the top 15 out of 351 at the end of the year… that is a very good year.

Wolv I actually went to games when Michigan was way down. I’ve stuck through the self imposed sanctions. We might be in a better situation but it still isn’t where it needs to be

Going back to 2004-05 when Kruger took over at UNLV, he has 5 wins in the NCAA tournament and 0 conference titles.

In that same period, JB has 15 tournament wins and 2 conference titles.

So, yes, we are still going to play this game. Or rather we played this game until this checkmate. Nice try, though.

My fandom exceeds that timespan…and I remember the pre-Fab 5 glory days of the mid-late 80s into the Fab 5 era. I think that is the problem with the younger generation of UM fans/alum…your standards are all gauged by the Amaker/Ellerbe eras, and above average is good on a RELEVANT basis. But you have to seriously ask yourself, are we heading in the right direction on an OBJECTIVE basis as opposed to past mediocrity?

Michael Dwumfour was the 954th rated recruit in the country according to the composite. He was the 2nd lowest rated recruit in our class (ahead of only Devin Bush’s teammate).

As I mentioned, I have no issue with this tactic. But it’s easier to do in football than in basketball because you have a lot more scholarships to work with.

But let’s be honest, Dwumfour and Gil were probably not going to be offered if they weren’t childhood friends (in Dwumfour’s case) or teammates of our top targets.

I feel falling back down is much harder to accept knowing we have a top 10 paid coach and we aren’t getting top 10 results. That’s where, to me, it shouldn’t be acceptable to Michigan or the fans. It’s in a better place than 10 years ago for sure, but I don’t feel beilein is living up to his contract. Like an athlete not putting up the numbers to support his contract, they get traded to released. Beilein deserves more time but a failure with the 17’ class might just be the end of the road.

You do realize Gary was friends with all the other Jersey guys too??

And also Dumafour was a PSU commit so let’s not act like he was committed to Temple

You said “top recruits.” Dwumfour is not a scrub, but he was not a “top recruit.”

Gary became friends with Walker during the recruiting process, according to the players themselves. They weren’t childhood friends like Gary and Dwumfour.

You realize that NJ isn’t just metropolitan New York, right? The other NJ guys are from Camden and Atlantic City.

Your ability to continue moving the goalposts is admirable, but ultimately unpersuasive.

The facts?

Like the fact that since Kruger went back to college in the 2004-05 season, he has 5 wins in the NCAA tournament and 0 conference titles.

In that same period, JB has 15 tournament wins and 2 conference titles.

Yeah, those pesky facts.

I didn’t mean to say I was alone in staying with it through the lean years. I guess that has just informed my feelings about the current situation in a different way than others.

You move the goal post at will pal.

You don’t see my view and I sure as heck don’t see yours.

My fandom does as well. Started in 1992 for me. I want to be elite like those glory days. But we had a long stretch between then and the JB era. That is all I was saying. After next year maybe I will feel differently than now if things aren’t more hopeful on the recruiting trail.

I didn’t move the goal post. Someone mentioned Rashan Gary as an example of recruiting a 5-star. Evidently, you thought that was funny. I stated that we hired his high school coach and signed his best friend, in part, to entice Gary.

You said that his friend was a top recruit. I showed that he wasn’t. And then you said that at least he wasn’t a no-name. That right there is a goal post that has been moved.

Okay, this is a fairly meaty post, but what direct knowledge is it based on? Begging–not going to happen. Poor shooters? Not going to happen. If the personality tests are intrusive or off-putting, bag 'em. Poor presentation? Says who? Willing to believe it, but show us the evidence. Requiring visits? May not be advantageous anymore, but certainly SEEMED to go against the promiscuous offering of everyone and anyone by many schools.

And screamer coaches? I’ve watched my own kid with four coaches now. Small, personal sample, but the quietest one drew the most respect from the kids, and the best play; the screamer is still being ridiculed by the parents. Would never give my kid to an Izzo, even after his doctor made him slow down. Especially not after 2012. Certain issues of common dignity just tend to be meaningful to some, not to others. Same goes for guys who throw chairs.

I absolutely did not say that about all five star recruits. Just most. You remind me of Bernie Sanders - you have all these “solutions” for Michigan basketball that bear no resemblance to reality. If only Beilein would take some sales seminars, and start listening to rap music, maybe he could relate to some of these kids. For a guy who claims to know something about basketball, you’re amazingly naive about basketball recruiting at this level.

Clearly, we’re not going 0-28, so why even throw out a useless hypothetical. Of course, we could make the Final Four next year and you’d still probably be calling for Beilein’s ouster. That’s far more realistic. Look, it hasn’t been a real good season, but we’re 21-11, 11-8, without two very important players. Christ, you act like we’re 10-20 or something. Get a grip.

Hopefully this board really doesn’t represent the overall fanbase. We go to a Final Four, an Elite Eight, and then have two disappointing years (again, one of those being a 20 win season) and you’ve been nothing but relentlessly critical of JB for three years on this board. Amazing. It’s as if we’re Duke, not a team who missed the tourney for 9 straight years before he took over.

That’s why I rarely visit this board anymore - you’re the ringleader of all this constant whining and bitching. I’d love to know what you actually do in real life, and how successful you are at it, just to put things in perspective, because with your smug, condescending, negative attitude toward our basketball coach, either you’re at the very top of your field (I give that a 1% chance) or even more absurd than I already imagine.

I guess the point there is would you rather get there consistently or win more once you’re there? I’d honestly rather get to the tournament at a higher rate than once every 5 years and win some when we do.

Not to mention all the injuries and bad luck we’ve had along the way. McGary hurt in 2013/14. Caris hurt after 2014. Caris hurt in 2014/15. McGary suspended, turns pro as a result. Walton hurt in 2014/15. Hatch injured in a plane crash. Caris out this year. Spike out this year. I know, those are all “excuses,” right?

Please go ahead and start fireJohnBeilein.com. I really hope you do.
