Eating Crow: Revisited

Honestly, that’s the problem…a lot of folks around here essentially want to limit the dialogue to include the 2 year elite run we had. You have to account for everything before and after that 2 year span, and it isn’t very good if we’re being frank about it.

I was responding directly to someone saying that Kruger has been better at OU.

I agree that Beilein needs to be better. Last year was completely awful. This year is unacceptable. Next year doesn’t look much better on paper, but I’m not yet ready to write it off

Agreed…next year is make or break, which is exactly what I said in the original post.

When Michigan fired Amaker Krueger is the guy I wanted. Guy is a fantastic coach. Everyone running their mouth about him better wait a couple weeks because he might be in the final four

Hate to say it, but agree with Matt that Ohio State should be the benchmark. Football school with multiple athletic 4-stars in every cycle (but mostly from the midwest), never compromise on size and athleticism, frequent deep tournament runs, occasional down years when attrition/misses get to them (like this year) but where the pipeline and overall trajectory remain strong.

Re Oregon… I just don’t think we can compete with their uniform game. I mean, having more than three uniforms is probably unethical, and we’re not gonna go there. We’re better than that guys.

People here really think Izzo is involved in dirty recruiting? Wow. and not sure what his interest level would be, but if Umich decides to move on from JB I would love to see them give Chris Mack from Xavier a look. Thoughts?

Perfect fit

So glad that someone else with some ties to the city/recruits can convey the same information I’ve been preaching for years…much appreciated.

Altman? The coach who accepted a transfer from Brandon Austin–the player that had been suspended for a year by Providence because of sexual assault allegations.

That same Brandon Austin, along with two other Oregon players, allegedly sexually assaulted a student at Oregon.

And Altman, despite likely knowing about the alleged assault for over a week, let those two other players play in the NCAA tournament.

He seems like a great guy.

Chris Mack is the PERFECT fit…recruits the area with the best of em. More resources at UM, more access to recruits. Players develop under Mack, he’s pretty much done the everything you can at a mid-major in terms of success.

I don’t care about nice guys, all I care about is winning. I’m not afraid to say that either…sports is a what have you done for me lately type business, and coaches have to make decisions based on that.

None of this lowest common denominator stuff for you, eh? We can only hope that you have no influence over young people.

Altman is a heck of a basketball coach!! Wins everywhere he has been!

You ever been around basketball kids?? You deal with some stuff

It’s possible to have a good basketball team that isn’t full of criminals. If you are ok with that, then you should take Dave Brandon’s advice and find another team.

We don’t need a nice guy, but we need a coach that doesn’t knowingly recruit sex offenders and allow players to play in games after committing sexual assaults.

Yeah and Mack has a really intense coaching style/demeanor which is a sharp contrast to JB’s laid back attitude. I think a lot of kids these days prefer the Mack/Calipari/Izzo coaching style.

Didn’t realize people were asking for him as coach?

He is a great basketball mind

I do, and its worked out pretty well to be honest. I would NEVER influence a kid to make a poor choice or compromise ethics. That being said, I want our head coach to win…without regard to being nice. I don’t want our coach breaking any rules, nor does JB have to break rules. He has to do 5 things:

  1. Stop issuing personality tests to recruits to see if they fit HIS vision of what a good person is.
  2. MUCH better presentation on visits
  3. More follow up calls with kids to make them feel like prioritized as recruits
  4. Stop requiring recruits to visit before we issue an offer
  5. Open your recruiting pool to players that are good athletes but can’t shoot

All of these things are within the rules, but would help immensely.

So sick of some folks acting like we have to cheat to get better recruiting. Essentially, JB has to be more flexible. And that means bringing his personality/social skills into the 21st century and begging…neither of those things are against the rules.

Good stuff on the boards today! I just want to clarify something that I think we all know, but that gets misrepresented in some arguments.

JB (especially the past couple years) has recruited top tier players. He just hasn’t landed them. I think the argument that he needs to do change his style, try harder, improve presentation, etc. is completely valid.

I just don’t like to see the narrative that JB doesn’t go after these kids, and only goes after lesser recruits. We have a roster that is half-loaded with Plan B and Plan C guys. That speaks to the former (that he can’t actually land them) but doesn’t mean that he hasn’t tried to improve the talent level.__

Of course kids relate to it…because the inner city is tough/gritty, some that’s all some kids know to a certain extent. I can personally tell you that some kids simply don’t want to play for a soft coach…and that is the perception of John Beilein.
