Durham Food & Activities

I saw Dylan’s tweet looking for Durham suggestions and figured the easiest thing to do was start a topic. I live in Raleigh now but my wife (also an M alum) got her masters at Duke in 2007 & Durham is an excellent food town. Happy to give more suggestions depending on price and food preference but here’s a few less expensive options to get you started:

Food:

Lilly’s Pizza is legendary in Raleigh & now has a sit down place in Durham. It’s won many awards from best in the state to top 10 in the country & everything is local/organic–their salads are also excellent. lillyspizza.com

Bull City Burger & Brewery has good burgers, great French fries ( I like the dirty fries) and brews a decent beer. bullcityburgerandbrewery.com/Bull_City_Burger_and_Brewery/Home.html

Taqueria Vaquita is a taco stand not far from the Duke campus. Outdoor seating and good authentic food.

Guglhuph is a European bakery cafe that does good breakfast and sandwiches.

Scratch is a bakery that does a good breakfast

Toast is a Italian inspired panini place that has very good sandwiches

Bars:

The Federal is an English Style pub close to East Campus with excellent food as well. Generally a grad students and townies crowd.

Green Room is a dive bar/gaming hall memorialized in the movie Bull Durham. Usually a laid back mixed crowd with great beer selection and jukebox.

Can’t say that I’m quite the expert in relation to the OP, but I’ve been to the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area a few times for work purposes.

If you’re looking for more of an upscale take on BBQ - more in the mold of sit down type restaurant vs. the typical Mom/Pop type of BBQ “joint”, I would suggest The Pit in Raleigh. Good food, a bit on the expenisve side for BBQ, but nothing ridiculous. They have the NC classics - pulled and chopped pork, in addition to the Texas style BBQ with brisket.

Agree that The Pit is good but it is a solid half hour from Duke. The best traditional NC BBQ is from Allen & Sons (Pittsboro location–also a ways away) but you could get decent BBQ at the Q-Shack near Duke
