DeVante’ Jones declares for NBA Draft

I’ll just add one final comment from my end that if you think anyone is arguing that Frankie Collins can’t or won’t take a big step, you are missing the point entirely. There to be quite the disconnect there. Bringing up Simpson and Morris is fine and good, but not everyone develops perfectly. We’d love for him to be Simpson or Morris and not Carlton Brundidge or Zeb Jackson or David DeJulius.

Pretty much. As someone probably considered “anti-Collins” in this thread, I would love for him to step up, and I loved him as a recruit. But I don’t know how someone looks at what he did, looks at a potential roster for next year, and comes away feeling confident that Michigan is going to be fine if he’s the starting PG.

Michigan barely made the tournament with a significantly better PG and a superstar center. They may not have that superstar center next year either.

Don’t burn his straw man down, he’s spent so much time making it!

Anyway, yes - the point is not that anyone believes he “cannot” do it. It’s that we’d like to not put an entire season on the assumption he will.

Well, not freshman Frankie. I don’t think he’s ever going to scare anyone with his shooting but if he can figure out how to shot 30-33% from the corner I’d gladly take it.

Also I’ll reiterate, Frankie’s strength is clearly in transition. If you could tell me we’d be playing more up and down the court and try to force more TO’s I’d be more behind the idea. But I don’t see the roster being built for that nor has that been something Juwan has emphasized on either end

This worrying happens year in and year out in college basketball.

How do we ever replace Darius Morris? Enter Trey Burke.
How do we ever replace Trey Burke and Tim Hardaway Jr.? Stauskas takes a massive jump.
How do we ever replace Stauskas and GRIII? Caris LeVert becomes a game changer.
How do we ever replace Caris LeVert and Derrick Walton? Hello Zavier Simpson and Moe Wagner.
How do we ever replace Moe Wagner? Hello Iggy Brazdeikas and Jon Teske takes a big jump.
How do we ever replace Brazeikas/Poole/Matthews? Hello Franz Wagner and Isaiah Livers.
How do we ever replace Zavier Simpson and Jon Teske? Hello Hunter Dickinson.

How do we ever replace Davante Jones and Hunter Dickinson? We’ll see.

Maybes it’s the glass half full side of me but I’m learned to appreciate the process, not worry about it.

Juwan himself has said that Frankie is a very good shooter in practice.

Now, I think that’s probably him blowing smoke but if that’s even remotely a possibility, Frankie is way more promising than the way some of you paint him.

I think it’s totally plausible he puts up

  • 53% TS
  • 30% AST
  • 18% TO
  • 2% STL

On like 25% USG. I would guess that’s prob an above average B1G player and M has a slightly above B1G avg offense? But the “why not” is bc a lot of dudes just bomb out and aren’t ever very good. If I had to guess, that stat line is a 25th percentile outcome for Frankie. The median is prob more like

  • 49% TS
  • 25% AST
  • 22% TO
  • 2% STL

In which case he’s a below avg B1G starter and Michigan misses the tournament. That’s still a better player than he was this year by a good chunk.

I thought Frankie showed us something against MSU and OSU also. CSU was a continuation of what was (IMO) a strong finish to his season.

My biggest takeaway watching him with Air Nado was that he would be elite in transition. He’s fast, athletic, and has great 1on1 moves downhill. I completely agree that it hurts us if we don’t play to that strength.

This thread is a sh** show lmao.

EDIT: To extrapolate, I agree that there’s nothing wrong with being worried about the PG spot and that, as MGL said, many many straw men are being build because it’s a Michigan forum and people don’t like pessimism. If you can call it that. Nothing said by any of the ‘anti Frankie’ crowd seems that controversial. What’s wrong with some insurance if there’s a spot open? Sure there are bigger needs. What if those needs are filled and you have an extra spot? You guys are seriously sitting still in that situation?

It’s also just that everybody is much better shooter in practice. I believe the rule of thumb is you make half the % you shoot in shooting drills?

Honestly that did stick out to me when Juwan said that. Maybe explains Frankie’s confidence in shooting even though it seems like he should be less confident. Overall without actual numbers from Juwan it’s just hard from our vantage point to take that in evaluations. But if Frankie overperforms any shooting expectations that quote will likely be the explanation

You can’t be serious with this! Simpson was great at the rim. What???

I’d say your first line is more likely than your second line.

I would guess some of his hook shots fell into the rim category too. I have no evidence though. Just based on the inexact nature of Little Bart’s little computer program.

Hey guys, just a reminder. Using multiple accounts and pretending to be different people is not allowed on the site and will lead to an account being shut down.

That means no more @CursedBlue and a final warning for @tarverine not to duplicate accounts.

It is hard enough trying to moderate this place as it is in the offseason without having to track stuff like that down. We want to keep this place positive and conduct a worthwhile discussion. I’m impressed that anyone can speak with certainty about Frankie Collins’ development path but at least be cordial when discussing it.

Yes, Jones was a main reason for the team getting themselves back into the tournament picture but the poor play, on both ends of the floor, by your “significantly better” PG, played a large part in why they had such a deep hole to dig out of. There was a big learning curve and Frankie is well on the way already. If you couldn’t see his improvements, from early in the season, up to the tournament, that’s on you.

I don’t feel totally comfortable but I’d roll with Frankie and Dug at the point and wouldn’t bring in another PG-only transfer. You wax so poetic about Simpson but it was after a 4 year career, not after his freshman season. What were you thinking then?

Now you’ve got me trying to play detective :joy:

If you think Frankie will play 70+% of Michigan’s minutes next year and end the season w a TS% above 53, I’ll take the other side of that.
