They really can’t be keeping both Burks and Noel???
Both have team options for the following season. Burks might be a useful one-year rental.
Or maybe even flip him for more assets at the deadline?
I don’t know enough about Tanking 101, but tell me if I have this right: The Pistons would do this to take on “bad contracts” of marginal players in order to tank-but-not-tank, unload these guys next year, and get a shot at a high-ish lottery pick. Or is this the Revenge of the Knicks?
That’s correct. There’s not much point to try to load up on bad contracts when you aren’t ready to compete.
Knicks paying the Kamba Walker buyout basically. 6mil in cash.
I get that point but I would rather the Pistons just play the young guys. They’re bringing Bagley back, Olynyk is signed for this year, Duren, Stewart. Noel shouldn’t Plat at all. I like some of the things Weaver has done but are they still not interested in being competitive or winning games? This is not a Weaver thing but I just hate the idea all these guys may get used to losing and that can really beat down a young group because losing and losing big has been acceptable here.
I mean, they pretty clearly need to build more around the young core they have. I don’t think they should be trying to push all of their chips in to overpay for a mid-tier FA.
With the team options next year, it basically just pushes the Pistons’ cap space out a year. I kind of like that.
Burks is a 40% three point shooter which can help Cade and Ivey’s development. (If they keep him.)
I’m not high on keeping Bagley. Noel provides a rim protector. Maybe Duren will spend most of his time in the G league? He’s very young and raw.
Feels like a reasonable move. Bringing in vets to help the culture / give Cade a mildly better supporting cast as the youngins grow. Get some assets, and then maybe flip them again at the deadline or just decline their options next year for a FA. The only issue is the team is way too center-heavy. Although it seems like they might be trying to play Stewart at PF, which would be horrible.
yup never been a fan of maxing players not worth maxing.
ayton and bridges aren’t turning the pistons into a championship team. i’d rather get one more top ten pick next year, another young piece on a rookie contract, be in future free agent markets and still have cash ready to pay these young guys as they get good and eventually need their next contract.
no need to tie up cash on a mid player and be selecting in the 15-20 range next year
I never said push their chips in. If Burks and Noel are getting minutes over Livers Duren, Olynyk can shoot ir better than Noel I just don’t get the plan. Since people love minute rotations.
Cunningham 34
Ivey 26
Bey 32
Bagley 22
Stewart 24
Joseph 6
Hayes 14
Diallo 10
Livers 18
Olynyk 20
Duren 12
Thats 218 minutes it’s easy to fill 22 minutes with their cap space and not including Burks and Noel. I am good with losing but not with 2 guys that aren’t part of the future.
You can still lose and not give middling vets court time. You can push your cap space down the line but players aren’t hitching their wagon to a team that has 3 straight years of 20ish wins. I love Cade, I like the pick of Ivey, I like Bey but if you’re a 30 mil player and they aren’t winning do you really want to play in Detroit?
Even tanking teams need senior players, to address exactly your concern about cultivating a losing mentality. Casey is pretty good about playing young players and letting them grow, I wouldn’t worry about Burks and Noel taking minutes away from our young guys lol
And you’ll also be surprised at how much better they are than any one of our guys. It happened last season with Kelly Olynyk. Everyone bemoans KO’s minutes but dude looked like the best big and at times, the second most talented player on the entire squad and I wish I were joking. Veterans are good, both for teaching young guys and for reminding Pistons fans this team is trash and needs to simmer for at least another year.
I figured Joseph and Olynyk were those guys.
Trash? This must be an online forum …
The Pistons get two players, two draft picks and cash. In order for it to be a trade, don’t they have to give something back to NY? Maybe their second round pick in 2124.
It’s going to be tied into the Duren trade I believe.
