Detroit Pistons & NBA Talk

No, the Knicks are trying to acquire Jalen Brunson and they need to clear up cap space. They’ve got money held up with Burks and Noel so they’re pretty much paying the Pistons to take those two off their books. This is what people mean when they say buying ‘bad contracts’ to acquire assets/picks.

I understand that, but can you technically have a trade without both teams getting something?

Yeah, I think it’s perfectly within the rules but NYK did get more capspace, not sure if that qualifies as something.

EDIT: i’m wrong lol it’s not within the rules, apparently

One theory from detroitbadboys.com

"[The Knicks] likely technically will receive the $20 million traded player exception Detroit received from Portland in the Grant deal. That appeals to the Knicks because they want to clear space and take nothing back in return so they can sign Jalen Brunson to a deal they will likely end up regretting.

A traded player exception cannot be traded along with players which is why this is being set up as two separate transactions."

I’m less positive on Noel, as they have three playable centers (if 19 year old Duren is playable which he may not be), but prior to this, the team has, conservatively, 4 entire players who can make a three point shot (Cade, Bey, Livers, Olynyk) and none other than Olynyk who profile as above average for their position (at least yet). In order for Cade and Ivey to develop, they need to play on a roster than is capable of spacing the floor and doing it at all times, not just when Olynyk plays (refer to kherodan’s comment above about how Olynyk drastically altered team performance). That means having 3 other guys who can make a shot on the floor when Cade plays and probably 4 of them around Ivey to start. They don’t have enough shooters for that, and Burks definitely fits the bill. In other words - I think there is more to gain by letting Cade play with Burks than with Hayes.

I buy that you will get more development by letting Cade and Ivey play on a spread floor than by continuing to try to juice the rock that is Killian Hayes.

I’m less sure on Noel, but he’s an elite defender when he’s healthy, is tradeable at his number, and it wouldn’t shock me if Duren gets some G league time due to age.

Can’t diallo bang threes?

He shoots 2.5 per 36 minutes and makes 27.7%.

He also has a team option for next year, so may not (though I’m leaning towards probably will) be on the team.

I generally like Hami, and endorse keeping him, but he is sort of emblematic off team strength (defense) and weakness (shooting).

If it’s a choice between him and Bagley, I’m team Diallo.

Joseph shot well last year (41%) is just ok on his career (34.8%), but is low volume (never more than 3.5 in 36 minutes). Burks has spent the last three years doubling that volume and shooting over 40%. They have nobody like him.

Here are Pistons who shot over 35% last year:

Jerami Grant (35.8% on 6 attempts per 36)
Corey Joseph (42% on 3.5 attempts per 36)
Isaiah Livers (42% on 6 attempts per 36 but only on 64 shots/19 games)

Joseph hit 41% behind the arc, he’s not necessarily a floor spacer but he can get a team into a set and hit shots.

Yes, I edited the above to include him. He’s half of Burks’ volume and is under 35% on his career.

He’s also not a shooting guard, which Burks is. The Pistons had no obvious 2 on the roster other than Ivey.

Yeah, I don’t see the point in Bagley. He’s great in the post and he’s a lob threat but now they have two other lob threats. I actually like Hami as a small ball 4 on offense. And a wild card on defense.

Nope, he’s a non-shooter. He’s athletic but not functional because he can’t get to his spot. He’ll need to bring defense and hopefully do the little things to help the team wing when he’s on the floor.

I think Livers has a real good chance of seeing PT bc he can shoot from 3 and is very reliable in his entire career.

Trying to take them one at a time:

  1. Agreed on Livers, I assume he’ll play this year.
  2. Hami is good around the hoop offensively.
  3. Bagley is a man without a position on defense, he can’t guard 4’s or 5’s.

If I were to guess the rotation looks like

Cade (32)/Joseph (10)
Ivey (25)/Hayes (12) (I see Hayes really being PG with Cade going to 2)/Burks (5)
Burks (25)/Livers (17)
Bey (32)/Hami (10)
Stewart (25)/Olynyk (17)

Olynyk and Noel each miss a minimum of 30 games so that backup center spot is pretty flexible

I applaud you (and @BurgerBoy82) for attempting minutes projections for an NBA team, let alone one that is this young and we’re not sure if they’re trying to win games or not.

For clarity’s sake, there are still 48 minutes in a NBA game yes?

Lol I did 42 minutes didn’t I.

Disregard! Just add 3 minutes to everyone…?

I say leave it, because those extra 6 minutes are so variable dependent anyway from game-to-game!

I’m sure there are reports of Livers working on his handle. Let’s put him at the 2
