What’s the saying on free agency? If you don’t overpay you aren’t signing anyone.
I know every player is different and there will be as many stars drafted in the middle of the first as there are in the top 10…but it is odds based. One of the things that scares me with guys like Sharpe is just the lack of data, which may have been part of the Hayes miss.
The potential ceiling is why you draft guys, but also why you miss when they don’t hit it. Murray is boring as a pick and may top out as a rotational contributor. Sharpe may be a total stud in two years…or out of the league. Glad it isn’t my job to pick.
Durant to Detroit incoming…

You can find rotational contributors in free agency. Detroit’s only avenue to get superstars is through the draft.
Yeah this is a very bad comparison. First of all it’s not our fault we got screwed in the lottery. Secondly, we had no super star to trade to get a ton of assets. SVG was terrible for this franchise and left us in such a bad spot.
Also, saying Bey is just a solid role player is so dumb. The guy has All-Star upside in my eyes. You can’t score 51 in an NBA game in your second year in the NBA and not have serious upside
We signed Chauncey. He was quite good.
when we signed chauncey he did so for the mid level exception. iirc we were looking at guys like travis best, chauncey, and jeff mcinnis. He was not perceived as a major catch and he didn’t even start the season as the starting pg when we signed him…
Um ok, none of these excuses prevent us from living this reality where the only two valuable assets in this franchise are Cade and Bey and our peers in OKC, Houston, and Magic are way ahead of us while we’re trying to seemingly jumpstart our timeline.
Bey had 16 ppg last year on a 2p FG% of 45% and 3 pt FG% of 34.6%. Sorry, no, I’m not penciling Bey as someone with All Star upside, especially just after getting a healthy reality check on Grant’s value as a player.
How can you call my assessment of Bey as a solid starter/ role player dumb and then say this?
You can’t just snap your fingers and suddenly have a bunch of assets. I still don’t understand what you are complaining that the Pistons should have done here
Well, you don’t acquire assets by getting rid of any half decent player you have ie Wood and Grant for chump change. They should have traded him ages ago when his value was high.
The story is still incomplete, but this is a bad trade as things stand now.
You can’t go back in time. And nobody knows what his actual value was. He isn’t a top 2 player on a good team so how much value does that carry?
So what, you hold onto Grant until the trade deadline when value might be even lower? You let him walk next year for nothing? You give him a major extension? There’s no mythical world where Grant returns a major haul in a trade. He isn’t James Harden. Unless you’re willing to re-sign him if you don’t find the right deal (I’m not), you have to get what you can now
Sounds like the Pistons backed themselves into a corner people were warning them about last off season.
I don’t think they were backing themselves in a corner unless Grant getting injured was part of the plan.
Still not sure how much a #3 or 4 guy gets you in a trade, even last year. But you’re complaining now about what the Pistons did now, so the complaint has to be based on current information. What did you want them to do on June 22, 2022 to improve the trajectory of the team? The gripe you could have is if you want Ayton’s max deal and wanted to use Grant in a sign and trade. But if you wanted assets and not Ayton, I’m not sure you were going to find what you were looking for. Grant’s name has been on the trade market forever. I’m sure the Pistons listened to plenty of offers. If there was a better offer out there I’m sure they would’ve taken it.
I actually don’t mind Detroits haul. Frees up cash for a true running partner for Cunningham and you get multiple picks this year In a class that has better depth imo than elite talent ( although I think this group has better top end talent than people are saying)
If you draft well you can add some nice young pieces that fit the timeline still. I like it considering the situation.
You’re a glass-half-empty guy in general…but penciling in Milwaukee to win the NBA Championship in 2025 is an optimistic take given their own current roster, so I’ll give you credit there
A thing Pistons fans should keep in mind
I realize that conspiracy theories are dumb…and that all fans feel snakebit… But there is zero chance the NBA let’s him go to Detroit.
I won’t question Weaver if Wembanyama is the play here.
Giannis isn’t dying at age 30. And who says I’m a guy?
Fair enough. And Fair enough. You may not have an opinion on the amount of content in a glass, either
