Detroit Pistons & NBA Talk

See this is agent serving nonsense (or a leak of someone’s intention.

Daniels didn’t scrimmage, so that shooting was in a workout, not competition, and we have a track record of rather poor shooting in the G League (really poor shooting).

He was in the bottom quartile of guards in speed and vertical (good at the cone drill), and in the bottom quartile in terms of overall athleticism.

Maybe he’s going to be awesome, I have seen anything outside of a highlight reel and a mixtape. But to describe his week as a success is pretty funny.

Like, he can dunk on nobody and shoot off the dribble over a defender who does not move millimeter laterally I guess?

Yeah Isaiah Barnes could be a top 5 pick based on his last work out video too

Every player had an incredible combine

Oh I agree, but I don’t see them taking a guard at 1 with this class that came out. I was talking about Chet in particular.

None of the top 3 prospects are great fits for what they need. Personally I’d trade down if I could and draft what you said.

Sharpe is probably the best fit with Ivey, Ty Ty , Mathurin following in no particular order . They can get away with Sharpe or Mathurin as Cole, Fultz, and Suggs are primary ball handlers.

I do know this. The magic are going to be intriguing in the next 2-3 years much like the pistons. Everyone says tanking doesn’t work but that’s crap. It doesn’t work at first but if you suck bad enough for 3-5 years , you end up in a nice spot as long as you aren’t a complete moron.

You sprinkle in a cagey veteran or two about 4-5 years from the original sucking and you are ready to contend for the next 6-8 years

Agreed but you need to draft well, and either due to scouting or bad luck, I don’t think they have. Franz is definitely a hit for the draft a lot, but Bamba is failure, Isaac - I mean anyone who is not gravely concerned for his future is a liar, Suggs was one of the most damaging players in the league. Anthony is maybe a projectable sixth man, Hampton showed some defensive promise….

There’s not much there to get pumped about outside of Franz. (I do think the Vuc trade for Carter and the Franz pick was highway robbery, to their credit, as a Bulls fan I’d trade Vuc for Wendell straight up).

Your analysis is fair but a bit harsh. They never had a top 3 pick unfortunately too. Maybe Suggs was but I think he went 4. Bambia too if I recall but maybe he did go 3 I can’t remember.

Cole might be a nice player after all but if he is a sixth man , I predict in 3-4 years he’s an elite one. Suggs was really bad but I’m not betting against him long term figuring it out. He’s still got nice potential and can be a winning guard long term.

Hampton is going to be a nice two way pro and is still a baby, franz is a steal clearly, Chuma profiles as a nice 3 and d guy still and played well at times, I like Carter a lot still.

Bamba was a miss but he’s turning the corner, it’s just going to be with someone else. I’m not going to hold that pick against them though cause I liked him too.

Isaac looked good and then got hurt. Let’s see what he looks like next year.

They are basically all kids still. Most those guys are 24 or younger. The nba is a grown mans league. With that group in 2-3 years they will compete and then they need to find their Rubio/ Pat bev types to help show them how to win.

Just goes to show how stacked last year’s class was.

I mean, we’re talking about Keegan Murray at 5 this year lol Franz could have gone top 3.

The Pistons are making only their 4th top-6 pick since the lottery began in 1985.

I seem to recall there was talk at this time last year about the class not being that deep.

Exactly right. Last year’s class was deep because we saw them for a year in the NBA and a bunch of guys exceeded expectations. On draft night, people said it was a 4-man draft with Cade, Mobley, Green, and Suggs. The Raptors were said to have reached for Barnes. OKC reached taking Giddey. Franz was considered a lottery pick, but more mocks I thought were 10-13.

Franz in this draft I think would be mocked around the same where he was last year. A high basketball IQ, great defender, can initiate some offense, but 34% from 3 wasn’t ideal for an NBA wing. He’d be viewed as a better version of Dyson Daniels, but I definitely don’t think he’d be in the discussion with the top-3.

Apparently, there are rumblings that Paolo could fall out of the top 3 (I’m dubious of these rumblings FWIW) and if he’s there at 5, take him and don’t overthink the pick and figure out the fit later.

Geez…why does Orlando still stink? I know the draft isn’t enough to build a team, but they will have 5 top-8 picks in six years plus two in the teens.

Apparently, projecting players can be hard, and sometimes you can swing too hard or sometimes you just fall in love with a players’ perceived strengths and don’t consider how it can hinder a future roster.

If you look above at ALL of the pistons roster talk, I don’t think Killian Hayes has been mentioned once. He was picked #7 two years ago, yes? Now he’s not even in fan-consideration when they talk about building the roster next to Cade. Yikes.

In most cases now you are talking about 18, 19 and 20yr olds. Their are no LeBron’s out there. In most cases its going to take a few years for these younsters to get their barrings. I am not sour on Killian Hayes. He has good size, good in open court and can play defense. Everyone knows he needs to work on his shot but I felt later in the season it was coming along. Unless they spin him off as part of a trade I see the Pistons being patient.

I think Killian Hayes works well as a backup PG for us. He can play some minutes next to Cade, but I like him initiating offense when Cade rests

@lopez @NamedMyDogFranz I should have clarified that I am not dogging Hayes (I was really impressed by Haliburton when he played UM, but otherwise I didn’t have a dog in the fight). I like Hayes despite his limitations.

BUT, you two are the first to mention him, and he’s not being mentioned by the several posters throughout this thread when they talk about the core that the Pistons are building around. Maybe that’s the fans giving up too soon…or maybe that’s an indication of how hard it is to select during a rebuild if you don’t have a top 2 or 3 pick.

I personally like all of Orlando’s picks as they made them…which is what prompted me to post about how hard projecting is.

I think this is the case. Look who was taken after Killian Hayes in that draft -
Obi Toppin
Deni Avdija
Jalen Smith
Devin Vassell
Haliburton
Kira Lewis Jr
Aaron Nesmith
Cole Anthony

Haliburton has been much better, but he’s the only one significantly better than Killian, IMO. Cole Anthony averaged more points, but on 39% shooting (33% from 3) which isn’t somebody you build around. Killian isn’t a starter on this Detroit team if he doesn’t improve his 3 point shooting. He could be a starter for other teams who have great shooting and a lob threat at center, but that’s not how Detroit is built. Taking the ball out of Cade’s hands that much doesn’t make the team better. If Killian’s shot improves, his defense and ball handling would be a plus, but without the shot he’s either a bench guy or going somewhere with a different roster where he fits better.

Yeah man, we are in total agreement about Killian the player and Killian’s situation. His career trajectory was altered by ping-pong balls the following season.

We also agree here…to my recollection, most mocks had us taking one of these two guys. I’m sure there was debate inside the front office even. I was team Haliburton, but I knew nothing about Hayes other than what I’d read. Goes to show how much luck is involved, and how “50/50” decisions can really alter a franchise.
