Detroit Pistons & NBA Talk

I don’t really see much of a way to defend that trade for the Mavs except “they’re desperate to do anything including trading for one of Luka’s friends.” value wise that’s horrendous. sounds like pistons fan fic to me but we’ll see I guess

I think the Pistons would have to at least throw in 31 too

That was part of it. Givony tweeted the rumor was Bogey + 31 for THJR + 10.

Maybe Dallas sees value in not tying up guaranteed cap space with the 10th pick because it’s not likely an immediate contributor, but still feels heavily skewed to favor Detroit. They get a player they can use, a massive jump from 31-10, and only give up a guy who isn’t in the long term plans anyway.

Yeah, I’m struggling to see it now. But the Mavs trading for Kyrie was a head scratcher too so who knows.

Throwing in 31 makes it more palatable for the Mavs. I imagine they are definitely aggressively shopping that pick though since they’re trying to win now

If Detroit pulled off this trade, I wonder if it would be possible to entice Brooklyn into a sign-and-trade for Cam Johnson (as long as he doesn’t sign an offer sheet with another team it can happen). Brooklyn is going to match most offers for Cam, but maybe whoever Brooklyn wants at 10 + Burks + Bagley would be interesting? They get two guys who can play now since they can’t tank, plus a young player from the 10th pick, while also freeing up salary in a couple years when the contracts expire. Detroit ends up with a starting lineup of Cade-Ivey-Cam-(5th pick of maybe Hendricks/Walker?)-Duren and reserves of Killian-THJR-Livers/Hami-Stewart-Wiseman?

Or would Detroit see somebody like Gradey Dick as being just a cheaper shooter with the 10th pick?

Bagley is an anchor contract and Burks doesn’t make too much sense for Brooklyn, though he is flippable

I may be crazy but long term I think Dick is better than Cam Johnson

I would offer the Clippers Burks for Norm Powell to see if they want to clear their books long term. Another offer I’d make is Bagley for John Collins. The Hawks need to room to re-sign Okongwu. I don’t love Collins but he gives you 2-3 years as a stretch PF.

Think this is still pretty spicy bc I don’t think the expected player from that slot is better than Cam but Johnson is pretty dang old so I’m kind of into it. Definitely seems plausible that Cam is aging out by the time the core is ready.

Hmm I’ll reject this one for the Ressler’s

I agree on value from the 10 slot, more just saying I think in 4 years I’d rather have Grady Dick than Cam (I also think Dick is too low on every board - a 19 year old 6’8" elite shooter with pretty good athleticism? Sign me up). I think there is next to no way that Dick fails, too.

I think people need to realize that if the Pistons asked every team in the league if the team would just take on Bagley’s contract and would have to give the Pistons nothing in return, every team would say “no”. This isn’t saying he has NO value as a player (though I kind of think he doesn’t) than to say the contract is pretty grossly negative.

How is a $12.5M/year for 2 year contract grossly negative? That feels like nothing to me in terms of overall NBA contracts.

BEcause he’s a minimum player

How about Bagley for Ben Simmons?

Oh you got me

Please note - I said “for nothing” not “for worse than nothing (ie Ben Simmons’ contract)”

Just trying to gauge the level of your Bagley hatred.

Oh, he’s not among the ten worst contracts. It’ll take some doing to best Simmons or Gordon Heyward.

He’s a minimum player for sure, but it feels like that’s about what minimum players get in the NBA now. Dallas seems like they’d like to move on from THJR’s contract paying him $17M/year. John Collins at $25M/year for the same stats as Bagley feels grossly negative.

Now those players did things to justify getting their deals, so it’s a different discussion, but I just don’t see 1 more year at $12.5M and then having an expiring deal to include in a trade being some sort of killer contract.

By “minimum player” I mean “makes the minimum”

Collins is a unique case where he is definitely a better defender than Bagley (who isn’t), and can shoot some, and was actually quite good before the personality conflict on that team became incredibly deep-seeded. Collins badly needs a change of scenery.
