The magic had vucevic who became Franz and additional picks. The pistons roster when weaver took over was less than zero value. So far he’s done the tear down, the rebuild is tbd but he’s done a good job or building up some compilation of assets
Something to keep in mind at this point is that Weaver has made some great moves to obtain value (Grant, Bojan), and then fumbled the “acquiring assets” part of it
I don’t really buy this. What people on message boards assume the value is of a player often really isn’t where that player is valued. Pistons fans thought Grant was worth a late lottery type pick, but it turns out he wasn’t. Weaver was able to move Grant to get a good enough pick to move to the Knicks, while taking on some salary, to be able to get that late lottery pick and grab Duren. That’s an overall win in my mind at this point.
Bojan was valued last offseason as being worth Kelly Olynyk and cap filler Saben Lee. This season he scored more points, mostly because he was on a bad team, but his ORTG dropped and his True Shooting % was just a couple points higher than it’s been the last 3 years. He’s basically the same exact guy he was last offseason, but a year older. Sure there were teams that would want a guy who can shoot like him at the deadline, but I doubt they were offering 1st round picks to get him. Weaver not moving him is more an indication to me that he saw him being more valuable on the roster than taking whatever teams were offering.
I think fans have overvalued the potential assets that could be attained more than Weaver getting fleeced by opposing GMs or holding out and not taking good deals.
Duren is absolutely going to be a good NBA starter. Already a good rebounder. And his footwork and passing instincts bode well for his offense down the line:
Aaron Gordon as well, who garnered a young player and a first rounder.
Pistons not only had nobody like that, they had negative assets in Griffin and Drummond, on such bad contracts they couldn’t even be moved for anything.
Did not realize that whitmore is 2 years younger than Miller. That’s a real thing.
I’m not sold on Weaver but I think he’s added a ton of talent. I think it’s fine to acquire draft busts and give them a second shot, so happens that none of them are at a position of need, well, still worthwhile to do at least something. I don’t think he’s a bad gm. I’m not convinced he’s a good or great one.
Nate’s rant about Weaver on Dunc’d On for their Not Executive OTY award was a good time. Think it’s basically correct that while the outcome of this season is acceptable bc Wemby and Scoot, it’s not what Weaver anticipated even adjusting for Cade’s injury and that a lot of the problems they had were a function of not ID’ing talent.
I don’t know how you can really evaluate him when the team’s objective has been to tank. Part of why they’ve been bad for 15 years is that for a long time they were stuck in that 30-40 win purgatory. It’s better to just bottom out and draft studs.
There is zero basis for this argument. You think he turned down a similar package midseason for Grant? Dizzo nailed it with his post since I’m too lazy to type that much.
I’m sorry, a high quality 3 is absolutely worth more than Nikola Vucevic, and failure to extract that value absolutely lands on Weaver. I acknowledge that after he sat on Grant and deemed him “untouchable” for 18 months, his value was lower.
