Detroit Pistons & NBA Talk

Same and with identical reasoning.

I stand by it

But if they fall 3 or lower I start seeing what I can get for moving down

Iā€™m high on Whitmore too for the age thing. He shoots it pretty well and looks fearsome when heā€™s going downhill.

I went with Ausar who I think can be a lockdown defender and has apparently been shooting it better.

oh wow you guys ainā€™t kidding Whitmore is crazy young and Miller is super old. i might change my vote.

Iā€™ve always lives Whitmore

Udoka :eyes:

Udoka is the best possible hire if the team is willing to live with the PR hit

Nothing thatā€™s been reported, at least with any credibility, has made Udokaā€™s transgressions seem prohibitively outrageous.

Maybe, I havenā€™t sought it out, but I think we can agree that it will be come with a PR hit

James Edwards III (Athletic beat writer) said (in a now deleted tweet) he thinks the next coach will be one of the first four names he listed in his Athletic piece about candidates.

Names did not leave me too optimistic. Though Iā€™ll also say I feel I have a far better grasp of what would make a good college coach and not so much what makes a good NBA coach

Ok

My Weaver take

I have not done a GM power ranking 1-30

Maybe he isnā€™t bottom 5 after I think about it

I think he is decidedly below average.

Good things: Ivey pick, Cade pick (I donā€™t think I give a massive amount of credit for these as I think like 27 of 30 GMs would have done those). Stewart was a good pick. I used to think Bey was, but they ended up getting nothing for that, so w/e. The Duren thing was a good transaction even though Iā€™m way lower on him than most here (Iā€™m not sure heā€™s an NBA starter but lots of time to see if he is)

Bad:

Hayes pick

Held onto Jerami Grant way too long and sold at like 70% of his peak value for a late first rounder three years in the future

Is currently holding onto Bojan for too long, could trade him for something that can help their next good team

Signed every FA save those two for way too much money (small point I guess)

His second draft exploits havenā€™t panned out

He has not shown he can or knows how to assemble a team that has an offensive and defensive theory, like, how can this roster execute offense and defense. Tbis is different than getting good or bad players, but itā€™s having more than 2 forwards, more than 3 guards, more than 2 guys who can shoot, and less than 8 centers for instance

Roast away

I donā€™t follow the NBA much beyond getting score updates for the pistons (fun notification to get every other day!), so iā€™ll just ask:

below average for the current crop of NBA GMs, or below average for like an absolute range of possibilities (as in, youā€™re not necessarily saying you can find 20 current GMs better, but his moves have not been good and a better GM would have followed a better plan)? obviously both can be true

Hereā€™s my thing

The Magic, Jazz (admittedly started with 2 tradeable pieces the Pistons did not), Cleveland, Indy, NO, OKC all have had similar or shorter tanks and are in better situations going forward. I like Houstonā€™s talent base more, but they are still a serious mess like Detroit.

They are looking at a fourth year of awful next year, and probably at least 2 years away from where OKC is now.

I think their org is probably better than Atlanta, Charlotte, Portland, Lakers, Chicago, Maybe Dallas (Nico stinks but Cubans spending helps). I think Washingtonā€™s FO is oddly pretty good, but saddled with the worst owner

Soā€¦bottom third?

Oh Minnesota is worse

Thatā€™s what ā€œget two draft picks right and bomb literally everything elseā€ looks like. I stand by the Jimmy Butler test (if Jimmy says your team is losers and your org doesnā€™t know how to win, heā€™s been batting 1000)

I will acknowledge that Weaver is suffering from massive organization malfeasance prior to his tenure (I have worse things to say about Gores).

Not a single one of these orgs had a worse starting set of assets than the pistons when weaver took over

Weavers made enough ā€œwtfā€ obviously bad moves that I donā€™t think you can say heā€™s a good GM. TBD on if heā€™s bad or okay.

Really hard to judge him until next season. Once Cade got hurt the purpose was to lose asant games possible. Next year needs to show real progress.
