Detroit Pistons & NBA Talk (Part 2)

I’m waiting for the Jalen Green/Jordan Poole trade. It’s desitny!

Yes, he played well against the Knicks, but he’s also not someone I am building around even 1 game into the future, and I think he is a very obvious place to upgrade. He also had 2-3 consecutive miserable post-seasons prior to joining the Pistons.

Yeah, I think I’m straying a little from my original point that the Green slander is too much. I don’t think Jalen Green is a future HOF or anything, but I also don’t think he’s a guy I’d give up on for a 37 year old who hasn’t seen a conference finals in six years.

For sure. He’s a bridge guy and a potential trade piece. He at least showed that he wasn’t washed out, like he looked to be at the end of his 6ers run and the first month of his return to Detroit.

Yeah I think Green by age, whatever, 27? will probably be an above average if sub-Devin Booker level shooting guard? But he’s got a long way to go.

The point Seth Partnow made on TPTSNBN that I had thought about a bit but is probably really worth understanding is what his next contract looks like relative to that production. Like, he could pretty easily end up in Zach Lavine territory where he’s just paid what he’s worth and he’s a struggle to fit on a good team bc the salary slot is just not worth it compared to a somewhat worse offensive player who is just a much better complement to winning basketball.

Sengun, I dk, he’s still young himself so can get a lot better and he’s clearly well ahead of schedule compared to what I gather is his most common comp:

But I still wonder just how good he can be and if he just doesn’t steal usage from guys with higher offensive creation ceilings?

I think the answer to your last question is “in theory, but not on last year’s Rockets!”

Yeah exactly. Sengun was absolutely necessary in that particular form on that team. But what does it look like when he needs to be a complementary piece? All of a sudden you need a lot more out of him defensively, right?

ok, comment

obviously this isn’t destiny but probably just good to remember that every we’re slagging Green with right now was being said about Booker at the same age (inefficient chucker!), so more just to note that, in the words of Natasha Bedingfield “today is where his book begins, the rest is still unwritten” (I have a 12 year old who is ironically (he says) or not (I think) insistent on listening to what he calls “white girl pop”)

yeah i definitely have been noodling around on DARKO and i think he’s probably never the creator for others or FT creator that Booker is. think he compares well to that next tier of SGs tho. so maybe he maxes as a, like, +2-3 guy? definitely useful, maybe a low end All Star esp. given the whole Yay Points thing? but also a guy who is extremely likely to be paid what he’s worth.

I haven’t listened to TPTSNBN on the Durant trade yet, but yeah what I was thinking “the problem with this Lavine/Herro archtype isn’t that they aren’t good players, it’s that they make too much to fit them onto the role you want them in”

so the key for wherever Green ends up (hope not Phoenix for his sake) is to not hand him the equivalent of $35 mil/year in 2025 terms (again, because he has that)

Yeah if that next contract is $40M I think you’re prob reasonably happy but if it’s anywhere near $60M your team is screwed

Yeah I guess with Jalen Green and the idea that’s he’s not good, of which is something I’m prone to. It’s more to do with the idea he’s kinda clearly headed for an archetype that is notoriously overpaid/overhyped.

I agree. He’s one dimensional aka scorer who doesn’t offer much else and that’s an issue with Green. If he’s not scoring, he’s not an useful player.

And to expound on the idea that being overpaid makes people think you are worse than you are, if you think about the players in that archetype who are not hated, it’s guys that just weren’t paid near as much.

Think someone like Jamal Crawford. Zach Lavine is definitely better than Jamal Crawford, but nobody elicits negative reactions where they hear the name Jamal Crawford. Hes’ the cool 6th man that comes off the bench and gets buckets. He also only made over 10M 3 seasons

yes, everyone loves then when they’re 6th man microwaves (Lou Williams, Herro and Poole before they started and everyone hated them)

LOL, TPTSNBN: “Well, the main reason AKME didn’t deserve to be extended is because they’re horrific at their job.”

do you even feel the rain on your skin bro

Kinda a niche discussion here but is there a reason you guys use DARKO over EPM?
