so the decision is already made? he’s not just a contender for the job?
Amaker and Johnny Dawkins were the other candidates I’m crying
i cant stop laughing
All of the coaches he’s placed at other schools and yet Jon Scheyer, a career assistant only at Duke is the leading candidate. That says something about something…though I’m not sure what.
Dawkins, Amaker, Wojo, Hurley, Brey, Snyder, Collins, Capel, Paulus, Blakeney…quantity over quality in that list.
Ha…I actually do not know…
that list is insane, it’s like Hoke x3. has to be the laziest blue blood replacement ever
Nope, Dane is one of the best.
Yeah, maybe this is showing my age - but love him or hate him he is an institution in college basketball.
I mean, I’m sure Duke will be just as hate-able without him. Especially with a former player taking over…
Coach K retiring, huh? Seems significant.
I don’t really know what the right next move is for Duke. Might as well use the assistant that’s already in the program (and already has a good understanding of the behind-the-scenes stuff currently in motion) rather than hire a mediocre K disciple from outside. Go with the mediocrity you know rather than the mediocrity you know slightly less; if he is, in fact, mediocre, you’ll be firing someone in a couple of years anyway and embarking on a big public coaching search.
Might as well skip the big expensive coaching search now since another one is probably coming anyway.
what i would’ve given to watch duke fans suffer through watching tommy amakers offense…
Goodman on his podcast with Dauster said he’s pretty sure it’s done and there’s a meeting in like 2 hours he thinks to finalize things. The meeting is basically just a formality to rubber stamp the move with the board. They are doing the live podcast on Twitter right now.
I actually view this as the “mediocrity you know slightly less” meaning he could still have upside that the others with head coaching experience have shown they do not have.
Though if I’m the AD, I would have at least made a run at some huge name guys not in the family tree (e.g Stephens). If any program could pull that off, it’s Duke.
There’s atleast two people obsessed with both Michigan hoops and Big Brother!
Maybe they did. Maybe they’ve been making calls to those types of guys…though besides Stephens I’m not sure who else you call. Do you try to lure Snyder away from the NBA despite his run in with the NCAA years ago? Do you talk to Bill Self, Jay Wright, or…uh…Cal?
UNC and Duke both turning over their coaches in the same season is a pretty big deal.
yeah I sort of get the Scheyer conclusion – if he’s a hit then you’re covered for the next 50 years – but you’re Duke, you have to at least kick the tires
Another thing about duke, is some duke fans i know question just how committed the admin will be to maintaining a high level bball program(resource and lower admission standards wise)without a legend fighting for it. This thing could go off the rails and stay off the rails imo, easily the most susceptible blue blood to it.
as many people pointed out over the last 1-2 years, Coach K’s coaching tree is terrible, especially considering how long he has been a head coach. I mean Quin Snyder is about the best you can find, but he has so much NCAA baggage as to be a non starter at Duke. So Duke either had to make a questionable hire, or go outside the family. They went with the no track record guy that might be good or bad instead of known mediocrity.
Staggering to me to see perhaps the best job in the country go to somebody with zero experience as a head coach. I mean they could have at least taken major swings at guys like Beard or Tony Bennett or Brad Stevens or Jay Wright or whoever.
if your client scores a Duke interview you want that to leak like crazy. that is the most contract leverage in the entire sport. instead Jeff Goodman has the only scoop and the only three names are Scheyer, Amaker, and Dawkins?
My lack of reading comprehension initially escaped me, it looks like K will retire after this season meaning he can essentially groom Scheyer for the role and hopefully smooth the transition better… also he can get his Kobe-esque fairwell tour
I’m really curious as to if this makes a lot of Duke targets easier to go for. In particular, Lively and Filipowski.
