Shaka is still pretty young for a HC so who knows what the future holds but his Texas resume flat out stinks. It has been way worse than mediocre. Texas isn’t a blue blood but it is the clear #2 program in the Big 8/12. The two preceding coaches (Penders and Barnes) combined for a Final Four, 4 E8s, 7 S16s, 24 tournament berths, 6 conference titles, and about .680 in the win column. All in 27 seasons. Shaka has missed the dance as many times in six years as they did in those 27. He is 0-3 in the dance against Northern Iowa, Nevada, and Abilene Christian.
He did win an NIT. Can’t leave that out
FWIW I probably tend to be on the pro-Shaka side considering many think he’s a flat out bad coach. But that loss to Abilene was not a good look at all. If he could have just beaten Abilene and UCLA a lot of his reputation would have come back
“Why would Turgeon leave Maryland for Oklahoma? He’s nervous about getting fired and wants to reset the clock before it happens?”
I’m surprised if OK wants him, tbh. But then, I came of age with the Sampson teams that dueled it out in great games with KS.
I think Turgeon might have more to do with hating Maryland and it’s fans lol
He doesn’t have an extension and is famously unloved…
I’m glad I wasn’t here during the coaching search, because there’d be some pretty terrible takes on Shaka Smart from me
I was pretty okay with the idea of him as our coach. Obviously that looks brutal in retrospect.
I think many figured he would be a fine option compared to Cooley and ??? and were more than willing to talk ourselves into Shaka.
Glad we didn’t have to.
Hey you would’ve been Team Shaka with me! There are dozens of us!
I think @alliteration really hit the nail on the head. It’s easy to talk yourself into Shaka when the alternative is Cooley.
Please stop. Let’s not talk about this until Juwan is signed for the next 35 years on a $4 billion buyout.
That’s a lot of years for inflation to do its thing. Better make it $50B.
LOL. Was just browsing Inflation-fight Twitter a minute ago…
“Enoch, if you don’t cross halfcourt by the time one of our guards shoots the ball, I can’t play you.”
Anyone watching these NIT games?
. . .
Yeah, me neither.
He’s 44 years old, led a team to a Final Four, a few conference championships. He hasn’t gotten over the hump at Texas but that doesn’t mean he’s a bad coach. Big 12 isn’t easy with basketball royalty in Kansas ruling the conference for a couple decades.
Running actions against Abilene should be easy. One of those guys was the size of my 12-year-old.
A lot of teams have had a horrendous tourney game and been ousted round 1. We have seen it at Virginia, MSU, Purdue, Michigan, OSU, Kansas, Duke the list goes on. Defining a 43 year old coach on that seems rather hasty.
I don’t think six years without a single win in the tournament is hasty…
