I think Kessler has some knee issues. He looks like a young Tim McCormick with those knee pads. I never thought he was a fit for UNC. I have no idea why he went there.
Sports Reference says he has 1 attempt. But I’m right there with you. In HS he was hitting 3s off of movement and looked like an instant stretch 5 that would maybe need work on defense. Now he has 1 3PA and is 3/12 from the line? Geez. Must be dealing with serious confidence issues or something cause that just doesn’t make sense. The FTs I saw him take were brutal.
This is an interesting discussion.
Especially when evaluating whether a player’s image is more valuable to the University vs the University’s value to them.
Clearly a player like Zion Williamson could likely make a bunch off of the NIL reform based upon their own image.
But what about an entrepreneurial player in the 10-15 range?
Is it possible they could make more money with NIL under the umbrella of the University. “I’m so and so, from the University of Michigan basketball team.” Either overtly or implied.
I don’t know the logistics of how things would work, but there would certainly seems lots of possibilities for an entrepreneurial athlete if the NIL reform passes.
Memphis down late to auburn who lost to ucf, penny really can’t coach a lick of offense
They don’t have to even be a good player. Adrien Nunez would make more money than any player on the roster this year if he could.
I find that extremely unlikely
Looks like an increasingly possible-possibility
Agreed. They had their ups and downs but when Livers was healthy they looked real real good at times.
I was bitter there was no tourney because I wanted to see it shake out.
From the Pitino tree, Billy Donovon worked out very well.
If we’re talking coaching trees, Larry Brown is the most prolific guy I can think of and it’s not close. Just during his 5 years at Kansas, he had Self, Calipari, Turgeon and Tad Boyle currently active, as well as Gregg Popovich embedded within the program for a year while on sabbatical from his the DIII job. If you add in the UCLA and SMU stints, the list gets longer.
Yeah again my argument is not that guys who were assistants for good coaches don’t work - that’s very not true.
What I was saying is that when schools restrict themselves to hiring THEIR OWN past assistants or alumni, it doesn’t work that well:
UNC clearly wanted an alum, and when Roy Williams (obviously qualified in his own right) said no, they just scooped up Matt Doherty, who would otherwise never have gotten the job. Mike Davis at Indiana did ok with an inherited roster (title game) but then failed. UConn clearly wanted an alum and got Kevin Ollie - who won with Calhoun’s players then tanked.
When I hear about Duke talking about hiring only Coach K alums or people debating which MSU assistant will take Izzo’s mantle, it tells me they aren’t looking at everyone, which is mistake.
Now if you have an alum with multiple final fours (like Roy Williams) you hire them obviously.
I would say this goes doubly for massive programs (like Duke or what Indiana was, or UNC, or Kentucky) and less for the Xavier’s (who have had a long run of just promoting the senior assistant) of the world. Duke posting Xavier’s results year in and year out would be a failure. Duke hiring Greg Gard-equivalent would be seen as a failure. If Duke doesn’t retain national prominence, they will be seen as failing - and Indont think they have a single alumnus who they should feel optimistic about continuing this.
“When I hear about Duke talking about hiring only Coach K alums or people debating which MSU assistant will take Izzo’s mantle, it tells me they aren’t looking at everyone, which is mistake”
Yes, very much agree.
Any of you guys watching Sparty Oakland?
Oakland’s hanging around, good to see them causing MSU fits. Sparty is good but not unbeatable.
This tells me that random internet posters like to debate things, not that Michigan State University is following tightly with the RCMB’s suggestions or not looking at all possible candidates.
Yeah, I also think this is just what people do since it’s impossible to predict who coaching candidates will be X years in the future. As far back as like 2014, people here were talking about Lavall being the Beilein replacement down the line.
Look I was just responding to a long conversation about which Duke alum is considered the “coach in waiting” when it’s pretty obvious none of them have done anything to deserve it. If Duke hires one, it is in my opinion a bad choice. Same as if MSU just promoteS Dane Fife.
The Coach K alum that would vaguely foot the bill is Quinn Snyder, but he had a tough time as a college coach and doubt he’d go back.
Does Bobby Knight get to claim all of Coach K’s little branches?
Raise your hand if you saw Bowling Green trailing by 37 to Wright State today as a possibility.
. . .
Liars!
Sounds like Wright State is challenging our MAC title.
