College Basketball Open Discussion

Coach K said the sport couldn’t survive another consecutive skipped NCAA tournament before the season started, then his team loses two straight home games to Big Ten teams, looks generally mediocre and now he says the sport needs to pause.

Classic.

I was wondering if his team not being too good may have factored in a bit.

I dare say that basketball survives, Coach! And we are going to see some innovation in many walks off life growing out of this, along with a great deal of hardship, some temporary, some permanent.

If and only if the players were being placed at far greater risk than not playing should a pause be considered. Otherwise, I admire everyone for perservering, and for figuring it out. A lot of ingenuity and goodwill is being expended on getting it right in many quarters.

College football, I’m not so sure!

Not sure that masks on the court would really change anything. I don’t think people are particularly concerned about the actual playing of the sport.

Everything else that these kids are being asked to do is the tough part to stomach. It’s one thing to ask a pro basketball player to lock themselves in their room all the time so that the season can go on. It’s a bit of a tougher ask for an amateur athlete.

Simple fix to this… abolish the amateur athlete

Well yeah, but that’s not happening right now. And is a whole different deal.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the fall out from playing this year does accelerate that shift, though.

Ik I was just joking that the NCAA could have solved a lot of their problems by doing that

What do u think that timeline looks like?

Not really my area of expertise. And I’m not completely sure how it’ll all play out. I imagine that NIL feels like a half measure, but in the end it gets us to the whole thing because it knocks down the initial wall.

Ok thanks. Dylan this might belong in a different thread but I figured I’d ask, how did u start your career in sports journalism?

Can probably elaborate more some other time, but I started the site in college and the rest was history. Not really sure that qualifies as a career in sports journalism but here we are.

Ok thanks. I’m sure your probably busy with other basketball things lol, but I was just curious how you started.

I think there’s an argument for pushing back the NCAA Tournament to allow for more games to be made up, particularly in conference, when they inevitably get cancelled due to outbreaks. But, not to shut down the whole season.

Hey, if you get a press pass you’re legit enough to be seen as such by UofM.

No offense to such publications, but even the less “on the court” based articles by the other writers here are more interesting to me than anything in the online papers. The Athletic is the only other site with reporting like that that I read.

Coach K’s “they should be going home for the holidays for mental health” makes his stance all the more unwieldy. Um, no, no they shouldn’t. If you’re pandemic serious, the idea is that they should not be traveling over the holidays. The idea is that no one should. And I dunno, this Duke team looks really lacking to me and Coach K timing up his back surgery to take a pass on the last Duke team that sucked? It makes me trust him on this less.

I remember him coaching Miami back in the late 90s when I first started following college basketball. He looks exactly the same now as he did then lol.

I 100% read that as 7’2" and his entire recruiting strategy made a lot more sense to me for a second.

Not sure how I feel about Oats just putting a freshman’s business out there like that (it isn’t really hard to figure out who he’s talking about) but he didn’t hold back on Coach K.
