College Basketball Open Discussion

Beilein at Koch Brothers U would be odd too.

The behind the scenes of the school is sketchy of course. I really don’t imagine Beilein discriminating based on the perceived quality of the education though I could be wrong there. He coached at a CC at one point. As far as the basketball side I think it’s a fit.

Besides, if he wants a JUCO heavy school, there’s one right down Washtenaw Ave that could use a shakeup. Easy commute.

First COVID cancellation I’ve seen…

2 weeks out we are about to the point where a positive test could cancel a game.

Is it expected that a single positive will spark cancellations for conference games, or is this more of a precaution due to the nature of the matchup? If we’re going one and done, this season will have less than half of its games played IMO.

Football games are being cancelled because close contacts of infected players have to quarantine, not just those that test positive. In football, that’s mostly players in the same position group.

In basketball, I would expect one positive case would cause so many teammates to quarantine that they would have to postpone practice and play.

Yeah, after thinking about it you’re right.

In European soccer they are just making players who test positive quarantine, other players can continue practicing and playing after retesting negative. I’m not sure how good of a comparison that is in terms testing frequency and rapid vs PCR tests, but I don’t think even 2-3 positives will necessarily mean a game has to be cancelled. Obviously if a team loses their 2 best players or all of their bigs they’ll want to cancel, but it should be fine as long as the Big Ten has a consistent policy.

Correct. Contact tracing is the big thing in college basketball. Not sure about the specifics but it is going to be an issue. Seems like different leagues are handling things differently.

Which is where it would be nice for the NCAA to do…something… anything…to contribute some uniformity to the process.

Also why I think a conference only schedule may end up being the way to go.

Uniformity in an uncertain, and fluid, situation isn’t necessarily the best course of action.

The goal should be to play as many games as can safely be played. No one knows what the right model for that is. Let conferences come up with their own rules that can be adjusted as the situation changes.

The reason there’s no uniformity is that there are vastly different financial constraints and incentives for each conference.

The NCAA did act by setting a very low minimum number of games. Their primary goal is to have an NCAA Tournament. Even if the path to get there looks different than normal and honestly probably different for different schools.

i have always been an optimist on COVID but now I start to worry that we may not have a season until Spring when the vaccine reaches the majority of the population. the next couple
of weeks may be the worst since April.

This is going to be very common over the next few weeks/months.

I am having a hard time understanding why Iona shuts down for a manager testing positive and MSU keeps practicing when Izzo tests positive. :man_shrugging:

NCAA is a complete failure in this regard. Will never understand why they were not the leaders in establishing standards and protocols across the board. Every scientist predicted the virus would get very bad again in the late fall and winter - which consists of the bulk of their biggest moneymakers in football and basketball. Just complete shortsightedness IMO.

Isn’t the whole idea of the B1G’s rapid testing so that teams don’t have to shut down because of positive tests? That’s what I always gathered.
