It’s the winning
I think Roy’s only had 6 one-and-dones in the past 10 years, or something like that? Ugliest blazers in the business, but credit where it’s due. He may not be producing as many pros, but that’s the tangential goal. He’s winning games, which is what UNC folks want him to be doing…
I was thinking mostly about player development and how that may appeal to recruits.
Is it not still surprising that Williams has never produced an NBA all-star at UNC? It surprised me. I guess Harrison Barnes is the closest Roy’s come.
NBA all-stars are a very specific stat that I don’t put a ton of stock into. Sort of like McDonald’s All Americans or Gold Glove awards. Only a very select few people get those and the process by which they are selected is somewhat flawed. Not to mention the players who are from outside the US, skipped college, barely played in college, etc.
Jamal Crawford is one of the best Michigan “alums” to play in the NBA, having won the 6th man award three times and has scored almost 20,000 points in his career. He’s never been an all-star though. And would we give Michigan or Ellerbe any credit for him given that he played 17 games?
Player development and putting NBA rotation players into the league are a good measure of success in addition to the actual on-court NCAA success. But NBA all-stars aren’t that meaningful.
As something to use as a recruiting pitch, I think it is still useful but I get what you’re saying.
I know his name was thrown around during our Howard hire as a candidate. Makes me even more glad that we didnt go that direction
There was some veiled talk that he’s not a culture fit and UM wasn’t interested at the time (want to say it may have come from Sam Webb but don’t quote me on that). Most people assumed it had to do with his sideline antics and his wife’s drinking problem. Now I wonder if this has been known at insider levels of college basketball for some time.
There’s a reason that Marshall is still at Wichita State after a very successful decade. I don’t think he was ever really a legitimate candidate for the U-M job to any extent but there were similar rumblings during the IU coaching search.
We’ll see if he’s still at Wichita after this story. I know all coaches can be jerks at times and when they and a player don’t see eye-to-eye there can be barbs thrown in the media later. But this story talked to something like 30 former players and coaches. Yikes…not a good look.
I always felt there was something there as to why he didn’t jump to somewhere else or wasn’t asked/given loads of money to jump somewhere else. Now it seems like we have a better idea as to what the skeletons in the closet are.
Pat Chambers: Pokes a player in the huddle
Gregg Marshall: “Hold my wife’s beer”
Marshall’s response
So let’s see here, he doesn’t even mention, much less deny, the auto incident with the other sport athlete, discussing only his relationship with “my players,” and with them, he doesn’t deny any of the factual allegations, stating only that what he does is not abusive. To me, that’s clear evidence that the facts, as alleged, are true, and the massive exodus from the program over the last few years, and especially this past spring, confirms this. If he’s not toast at Wichita State and everywhere else in the college basketball world, it’s a travesty.
This is the behavior that got Bobby Knight fired, right across the board. Maybe his job would have been safe 20 years before Knight was fired, but surely not 20 years after.
Not throwing in any evaluation of whether he is actually guilty or anything at this point but in all likelihood he has a lawyer and has advised him not to comment on any of the specifics until Witchitas investigation has wrapped. No need to incriminate oneself at this point
The fact that its Wichita that did the investigation without extreme outside pressure shows it’s likely all true.
Random thought, Beilein could be a great fit at Wichita. Good enough program where he’d still be relevant and could compete for Final Fours. They have deep pockets. Maybe the best fit of any I’ve seen.
Yeah, I’m a lawyer myself, and I get that, but if you’re going to release any statement at all, other than simply saying that you cannot comment on an ongoing investigation, you shouldn’t pick and choose what you’re going to deny and what you’re not going to even mention. When you do what Marshall did in terms of his statement, you’re leaving yourself wide open for the allegations which are not denied to be accepted as true.
Completely fair and defer to your expertise. I just play an armchair lawyer sometimes (I work with a lot). Definitely a shady situation and expect the hammer to come down based on the stack of testimony
Yikes
