College Basketball Open Discussion

Very interesting. So does that mean Livers could still technically declare for the draft? I know there was a press release and everything, so it would be surprising, but with how 2020 goes and living with BPONE, I’m now horrified of the thought.

Yeah, the early entry deadline for the NBA is technically after the withdrawal date. So you could withdraw and then re-enter.

Yes, that would be surprising but theoretically could happen

I’m unclear on this. The deadline for withdrawing from early entry for the NBA draft is later at the NBA level than at the NCAA level, but the NBA deadline for applying is already well passed. Has the deadline for applying been extended? if not, players wouldn’t be able to withdraw and then re-apply. And if they don’t withdraw by the NCAA’s date, they lose college eligibility as I understand it.

Everything is crazy in these times, so things may be different than they were in the past. I do know that the NBA deadline for withdrawing has always been later than the college deadline, and I can’t remember a single player who formally withdrew from the draft process by the NCAA deadline and then successfully re-applied after the NCAA deadline. You would think those cases would have existed if this was indeed a possibility.

I believe the new early entry deadline is August 17th.

Vecenie lays it out here:

But before that, it’s worth noting that the deadline date for college basketball players who have not fully committed to the draft process — as set by the NCAA — is on Aug. 3. Players such as Michigan State’s Xavier Tillman, Stanford’s Tyrell Terry and Mississippi State’s Robert Woodard will have to make a choice by that date as to whether they want to start their professional careers, or head back to college basketball.

And because of that lack of information, the college early entry deadline date for the draft is not actually even the actual, final decision date for collegiate prospects. The NBA’s early entry date is Aug. 17, two weeks after the NCAA’s deadline. Based off of those rules, NBA sources confirmed for The Athletic , a player who is struggling with his pre-draft decision can announce that he is returning to school on Aug. 3 to essentially get two additional weeks to make a final decision. If a player were to pull his name out of the draft then, he could then re-declare for the draft if he changes his mind.

I did have that same thought, so it’s probably unlikely to happen. But I believe it’s theoretically possible.

The NBA Early ENTRY deadline rather than withdrawal deadline is the issue here.

In the past, the early ENTRY deadline was always before both the NBA and NCAA WITHDRAWAL deadline.

Now the ENTRY deadline is actually past the NCAA WITHDRAWAL deadline.

So in the past, if you withdrew before the NCAA deadline you couldn’t really re-declare because the deadline to declare had been past. The second withdrawal deadline didn’t mean anything because you already withdrew.

Now, you could “declare” again and still fit in the NBA’s deadlines.

Ahhh that makes sense. Thanks.

I looked at Henry’s numbers from last year, because I was wondering what I’m missing. 10.0 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.9 assists, on .441 shooting, .344 from three.

Solid, to be sure, but hardly awesome. In 14 games, he failed to score double digit points.

He’s a nice 3rd or 4th option. I think he’ll need to improve significantly to be a top player on a #1 seed/Final Four contender.

We’ll see. I think the prognosticators are really underestimating the importance of Winston. If Tillman returns, I’ll say they’re a 3-4 seed. Without him, I’d say more like a 6 seed. Without Tillman, Henry would be the third best player on Michigan (assuming he’s better than Brooks), behind Livers and Franz.

If Tillman and Henry return, MSU is easily the best defensive team in the Big Ten right? Potentially in the country.

Nightmare: Izzo hires Beilein as an assistant so he doesn’t have to keep teams under 50 to win.

(not really, just a cheap laugh please)

I think you might be forgetting the Hauser bro is eligible. And ignoring that MSU is going to be insane defensively with Tillman, and still much better than Michigan defensively without him. I’d say 1-3 seed with Tillman, and a 3-6 without.

I’d also say there’s a real chance Henry is as good as Livers and Wagner next year.

I got real burned by underestimating MSU in 2019 and I’m not gonna do that again.

And Rocket Watts sophomore leap. And the fact that Tillman will be a potential 1st Team AA. And a top-40 freshman big man. And a coach who has won the Big Ten three years in a row. Etc.

Tillman will make a huge difference – between preseason Final Four type pick and just a good top half Big Ten team – but this idea that MSU isn’t going to be good is just a bit off the mark.

They’re going to be good. 3-4 seed line. People were calling them a 1 seed last year at this time. I think it’s more likely they roll into the tournament playing like a 1 seed than it is that they actually are seeded as such.

Hard to project seeds with so many variables. Obviously Tillman is huge…even if he regresses without Winston.

Henry is the type of player that everyone projects to be elite even if the evidence is limited. In some ways he’s like Poole in that we knew he had a ton of potential but was just so inconsistent. Henry has the athleticism and talent to be a first team all conference. He spent most of last year in the doghouse and afraid to shoot. Will he be better this year with a weird off-season and no Winston? Hard to say. I think Izzo drained all of his confidence last year - but Izzo is great at getting those upper classmen to succeed.

I will be fascinated to see them without Tillman. Houser is good, but a different player. Henry is a wildcard. Watts could be great - or drive Izzo crazy. My guess is that they struggle in their first ten games but are dynamic later.

Another way to look at it with all these variables… are there four other teams that you would unquestionably take over State next year?

Looking in on this NBA play-in game and I gotta say that while I may adjust. . . the game needs a live audience. If it’s Michigan I imagine I’ll be absorbed no matter what, but. . .

Really? I think, outside of the virtual fans, it looks great. By increasing the space around the court and spreading out the bench, the main camera angles look really good. They really filled out the frame.

It’ll definitely look strange at Crisler because you’ll see the empty seats, but visually I like the way these NBA games have looked.

Audio-wise, it be nice if they could license some great music and not worry about pumping in fake crowd noise. Some music, the sounds of the actual game and an enthusiastic announcer would work for me. But, I’m a basketball degenerate that would be watching Summer League games right now.

We can agree to disagree. I think they will miss Winston a lot. And we’ll see if Tillman even returns.
