Doesn’t that kind of illustrate the whole point though? He could still be the first pick and his NBA career will be on his way and his college will be a trivia question among casual fans.
I mean… who wouldn’t tune in to watch Emoni Bates in G League games. They used to play Lebron’s high school games in prime time on ESPN and got huge ratings. Really, just surprised the NBA brain trust took this long to find a way to make money off their own 1 and done rule.
Just with name, image, likeness, I think a lot college kids could do those six figure deals in endorsements. I could see the elite players at blue blood schools pulling in 7 figures. I don’t know that Zion would have gotten the shoe deal he got by going G League instead of Duke. I suppose part of the decision could be if you want to actually go to college, or if you just want to focus on your craft and focus 100% on basketball.
It will be interesting to see how many prospects even get the G League option every year.
If the 2nd and 3rd paragraphs don’t feel true
You have to go to #13 in current mocks to find a guy who played for a frequently televised college team (Vernon Carey)
College exposure doesn’t matter.
The only guy on the list college DID matter for was Obi Toppin, and it’s not because he went to a school with a big TV contract.
Maybe. He whiffed on five-stars, but got more out of David and Brooks than Beilein had.
Not for draft position, no. But that’s not the only thing they think about.
I didn’t read everything so I apologize if I missed this but what happens when you’re guy #12 on this g league team and you never play and your flaws shine bright for the NBA to see? Can’t go play in college now. And yes the education piece is nice for guys who fizzle out but how many will actually take advantage of that? And if you do you’re still missing out on the networking of playing on a college team. I think this makes sense for guys who are almost guaranteed to be drafted but there’s at least some risk for guys who aren’t. That said many of these guys think they’re the best so they may not think about it at all that way.
I think the team would be a handful of these straight out of high school kids and the rest would be G-League veterans.
That tweet seems short sighted. My understanding (which is limited) is that up until taking the Michigan job, Juwan’s entire coaching career was developing (mostly) young bigs in the NBA.
His ability to recruit is still up in the air.
Lol his ability to recruit is still up in the air? He was hired very deep into the recruiting process for the majority of players and got Michigan into legitimate contention for about 7 or 8 top 40 players and landed a high four star center (and technically a five star as well even though he ultimately decided on pro ball). Sure, you’d like to see him finish some more of these, but it’s incredible that he was even get to the table when he came in so late. Most schools start developing relationships with players around their sophomore year and some even earlier than that. Juwan started in their senior years.
I love drawing massive conclusions from an N of 1 as much as anybody, but it’s still an N of 1. It’s a great single case. I love what it suggests, but it’s still an N of 1. My point was simply that Juwan’s resume has more evidence of his ability to develop than it does of his ability to recruit.
Sure, if you’re just looking at who Juwan was able to sign, the sample size is too small.
But look at how he took to recruiting, how he was able to connect with players and their families, how he was able to convey his love for Michigan. Those things are repeatable and don’t require a large sample size to show what kind of recruiter he will be at Michigan.
I think there’s plenty of reasons to be optimistic about him as a recruiter, but also as a tactician and a developer. We sure did have a wonderful developer before, no question. But Beilein’s ability at it is not an indicator of Howard’s lack of it.
Don’t forget Franz Wagner when discussing Juwan’s recruiting ability. Pretty telling that he would still commit to Michigan under a totally different coach that recruited him/his brother played for.
NCAA is adjusting academic eligibility due to students missing SATs bc of COVID-19. Expect a higher volume of reclassifying up.
It was moreso a joke because being a fan of Michigan always seems to have more unlucky moments than lucky.
This could help Michigan in trying to potentially get a player or two to reclass up this cycle if they want it.
Not hard to imagine that being a help to us. In the department of wishful thinking, maybe Adam Miller will feel like he needs to secure his spot here and just do it.
They might need 2-3 teams. How many guys can play? If a player picks that route they gotta expect to see the court.
