No, they really shouldn’t. If somebody coughs/sneezes on you then it would be helpful, but even in that case, there’s a good chance it gets in your eyes or you’re grossed out, touch the mask, contaminate your hands, and then touch your face under the mask anyway.
Densely populated areas, like the subway in NYC, would be a place wearing a mask could make some sense. The guy I saw walking around at Meijer on a Sunday morning at 8am with nobody within 20 feet of him is probably not necessary.
4.5 meters/30 minutes. Keep that in mind at the grocery store checkout. I agree that a facemask can be ineffective if you don’t follow all recommended hygiene, but if you do, they give you an extra measure of protection. Just because they can be defeated by bad hygiene practices doesn’t mean they serve no purpose for those who do follow best practices.
“researchers found that a bus passenger infected fellow travellers sitting 4.5 metres away”
How could they possibly confirm that? The person who got infected didn’t touch a surface/handrail/seat and contaminate themself? They weren’t in contact with anyone else who could have transmitted it? Was the bus moving at the time of the infection where the person sneezed and the droplets were in the air as the bus moved forward, essentially pulling passengers from the back into the exposed area? Did the infected person cough on a handle and that person 4.5m away got up to get off the bus and touched the handle? There are so many uncertainties here that there is no way taking a single data point and saying everyone should be wearing masks in public is anything but a reach.
And when you also see, " Note: The study at the centre of this article on the transmission of the coronavirus was retracted on Tuesday by the journal" it kinda suggests maybe they didn’t have accurate data.
I’m just looking for silver lining here. I mean, imagine these games having no fans and actually being able to hear loud and clear Izzo and Coach K scream at their players and officials? Would they be conscious of this and tone it down, thus making them less effective?
Honestly I feel like our team is equipped to handle a crowdless atmosphere more than most. I have little evidence to prove it but I feel like it plays even more into our neutral court prowess
The masks are AWFUL. I flew through Tokyo at the end of January and got one, and just couldn’t keep it on. Neither could anyone else. Everyone was taking them off to talk to the flight attendants and what not. Soggy nasty things. Let’s just wash our hands every hour on the hour.
