NET is used by the NCAA Tournament selection committee, and supposedly combines predictive and resume metrics. KenPom is just a guy’s (a very smart guy that we all like) predictive ranking system.
It doesn’t really make sense for Ken or the NCAA to use Ken’s rankings because he could just change them whenever he saw fit, or be accused of that, or feel pressure not to do that, which would hurt his product.
Instead, the NCAA created their own ranking that they can change whenever they want without telling people.
It’s not very transparent, but it generally does a very good job by the end of the year.
I’ve been very anti-NET due to the lack of transparency, but the results have been good. It is a massive lift over the RPI (which was a disaster) and I think has improved the process.
They are opponent adjusted – again we don’t really know the innerworkings, but it is a Google model – but because they do take MoV into account, people like to freak out about this.
It plays an impact, but the bigger part of this whole thing is that there just aren’t many games yet. Those four ISU blowouts aren’t going to prop up their NET all season long.
Iowa State is also 23rd in KenPom, so it isn’t like that is an insane ranking by any stretch of the imagination.
Here are some coaches. Putting these out here for no particular reason. Just totally random
