Feels like there was a real chance a non-PG guard type was going to lead to Kobe exiting. Heck, it feels like there was a chance TSJ was going to cause that.

There were Bufkin transfer rumors that started to pop up. Which were crazy cause apparently we aren’t allowed to have more than 3 guards. I guess it’s a thing where brining in a guy to be the 4th is the same thing as bringing in a 5th. It’s a new guy and that’s a threat

Well, I also think there are a couple other layers to JL. If Kobe leaves for the NBA, he’s a veteran guy who knows your system. If Kobe stays then you aren’t getting a transfer guard to show up so you either keep JL for your third or you’re rolling with GW3. Seems like a win/win to keep JL if he is your third guy playing 20mpg.

Yeah, I mean you can see why Kobe would have been frustrated if U-M brought in another unproven 2-guard.
I liked Carter’s film at the time, but the fit would have always been a bit funky given that Bufkin needed to be the starting two.
At this point, betting on Kobe over a transfer 2-guard seems like the obvious right move.
Shannon was a way better fit in that you’d get playmaking but also a guy who can play the four.
This is a great example of how things aren’t really about scholarship math. The guys you want in the portal are generally going to want starting spots.

Great idea for us to play them in a rigged environment. I know it was the Jordan classic, but I wish we had played Oklahoma or Florida.
Playing them in a “neutral” game in north carolina was stupid.
Seeing their coach get to stomp and scream for 5 minutes with the refs allowing it was a complete joke.
