Sure, I see your point. Twill is in a far less perfect role though. Baker might be better in that role.
Yeah I donât really care if heâs a starter, but Iâd like to see them try lineups with he and Jett on the floor together more often. Itâs fun seeing the spacing and shooting that can bring. We know, we know, rebounding suffers so can only do it in spurts, but the offense becomes tough to stop. Opens up the floor for Hunter too
Pushing Baker from 15 to 20 minutes when heâs playing well is reasonable. Starting Baker or trying to push him to starter minutes doesnât make much sense to me.
Especially after a week where TWill and Baker both had a positive impact.
I just want more than 17 Joey Baker minutes per game
And another thing to skew this on a small sampleâŚwasnât this the group the made the big 2nd half run at NW when Juwan pulled Jett?
And the Pitt game Iâm guessing because Dug played a lot in that game and Jett was in foul trouble.
Just points to what happened in a few distinct moments to me rather than some sort of long-term lineup solution.
Why? Your second sentence in the quote doesnât apply to most weeks. Twillâs had a few good games here and there, in most cases isnât bringing much to the starting lineup. What would it hurt to try this against Nebraska and see what it looks like?
Michigan needs both guys to play well. I think they both have a way better chance of playing well in their current roles.
Trying to turn Baker (fouls, stamina, size) into a starting power forward just doesnât add up to me.
Removing your best scoring option off the bench doesnât make a lot of sense. Now you are bringing Jace and TWill in at the U12? How is Michigan rotating through the subs at the 1-2-3 then?
Let Baker come in for 8 minutes in the middle of each half and hunt shots and always have at least one shooter on the floor.
The role is right, it is just about him consistently hitting shots in that role.
For me personally, the answerâs in the Form tracker thread:
âThe problem is that in most of those other games, the other guys didnât step up. Kobe and Joey having an awesome week makes the game way easier for Dickinson.â
More broadly, one issue you had with last yearâs offense was having a bad shooter at the 4, and, if I have it right, one of your reasons for optimism going into this year was having a better shooter at the four. That was of course accurately labeled as an assumption, in case Twill wasnât able to show year-on-year improvement.
The juryâs no longer out there. Twill isnât even having the occasional game where he makes more than 1 three, as you rightly figured he would. And if you think the key to getting the best out of Hunter is having shooters making shots, then it seems reasonable to try Baker and work your way around the drawbacks of the decision. Maybe you just die for 4 minutes a half with Tarris and no shooters around him in order to have Hunter rolling. Or you stagger the wings differently. Dunno. But these dots connect.
I actually think this is way overstated. Michiganâs offense was really good with Moussa, the defense was the problem.
This feels like something that people just keep trying to speak into fact.
Broadly speaking, trying to change the rotation after a week where everyone played well in their roles feels like something that wouldnât make sense. It also is something that I think we all know wonât happen (only starting lineup âchangesâ this year have been due to injury).
I just donât see how things would add up if you start your only backup at the 1-2-3 at the 4 position.
Joey playing 12 minutes per half instead of 8 minutes per half off the bench is the best of both worlds here and thereâs not much to point to that says Michigan would be worse if he played 8 more minutes a game than he does now.
To be fair, that was you in the offseason saying it about the shooting. Although I also take the point that offense certainly wasnât the problem last year. And if you put your only backup at those spots at the starting 4, you have a former starting 4 to play those roles. Baker certainly never plays PG minutes.
I really donât think thatâs something I pushed. Thought that TWill playing the four would help YM defend the perimeter better. Was always pretty down on his shooting.
Certainly I might have it wrong.
Feel like thereâs a pretty clear on ramp to do that but I also think thereâs a ceiling to how many he can play well (thought he ran out of gas vs Purdue) and fouls have clearly been an issue.
When was the last time a NCAA runner-up, returning 4 starters and a solid transfer, was as bad as UNC this year? Not just losing, but frequently losing badly. Like today.
When was the last time we had an ncaa runner up as bad as UNc last year?
I think it says something about Pete Nance.
Pete ainât the problem. Iâd argue the guards are. 1-13 today, for example
Nance has struggled. Seems like he didnât quite fit the system. Love is a pure hot/cold shooter that got hot for a couple games last year
