The implications are ugly, yeah. He’s pretty literally off the chart that wikipedia has to estimate the number of drinks he had.
I think it’s been public knowledge that he’s been diligently drinking himself to death for years

It’s only a super sad story if he doesn’t attempt to turn it around. I’ve seen people his age come through the program and do well on the other side, but a lot just keep sinking all the way to the bottom. Hopefully it’s a catalyst for him to make changes.

I’d say it’s both. It definitely sounds like someone afflicted with alcoholism, but a guy in his position must have plenty of people willing to give him a ride.
