I don’t completely understand some of the early dunking on transfer pick ups. (And I love the Weave guys).
I just don’t think the quality of a team makes much of any sense when you are projecting someone individually. And most guys are going to be recruited to play a different role at their new spot.
Withers as a depth shooting four makes a ton of sense – basically view this as UNC’s version of taking Tray Jackson – and he feels like a good pick up for UNC.
Basically just don’t think “played wrong role for a crappy team” should be something that assures us that someone is bad. We should say “how would these skills fit in a different system or different opportunity.”
I feel like this was talked about a bit when looking at Mack: how are three guys on a bad buffalo team all considered good transfer prospects to high major programs? I wonder what kind of correlation there is between some combined team ranking - individual production and future production after transferring.
Weakness in next years class is why I thought Kobe should have cone back. Any fringe top 20 guy , should reconsider imo.Kobe could have played himself into a lottery lock pretty easily
If you were wondering whether Izzo changed his tune on the portal. Nope:
“I’m a bad guy to talk to about the portal because it’s ridiculous," Izzo said, via Illini Inquirer. “I think all the people that thought it might be a good idea to give kids some freedom? I don’t think they feel that today. To transfer whenever you want, leave whenever you want, do whatever you want. I’m glad it wasn’t that way when I was in school because I would’ve made a lot of bad mistakes. Before it’s all said and done, the biggest losers will be all the people who thought they were the biggest winners. And that’s the kids, the players, the students. Not a fan of it. But there’s a lot of things I’m not a fan of that I have to do. I’ll try to do the best I can. It makes things hard. It’s like we put a jail around all the kids on our campus to try and keep people from poaching our kids.”
