Cleveland Cavaliers hire John Beilein

Yep. I won’t be surprised if the coaching search goes well, and Michigan extends its success, albeit in a different way. But the way this happened, coming a year after him pledging to retire here, feels like a little bit of an extra twisting of a knife, even if that wasn’t actually what it was. Just another kick in the balls for Michigan fans. that weird alternate universe in which he wastes the rest of his career spinning his wheels with the Pistons actually somehow looks attractive now.

Right I agree…being able to talk about playing with dwade and bron is a huge draw to kids growing up

Sounds like it to me. Any of those general statements about being ready for a new challenge and all could very well be lazy analysis.

Almost assuredly Iggy will be gone now, I doubt Wagner comes to Michigan and how many transfer from Michigan because of this without a big hire? $12.3 million is nothing for a buyout to get a Coach Beard.

That’s a bummer. Let’s all pitch in and buy Dylan a couple of pitchers of sangria on his disrupted vacation.

The timing of this sucks. UM will attract good candidates but JB was an elite coach and will be very difficult to replace.

Let me express my admiration for you guys able to wish him good luck today. That’ll come for me another day. Today I’m focused on Michigan basketball.

[quote=“umhoops, post:130, topic:5291, full:true”]Woj might have known that Beilein was going to the NBA before Beilein did. That’s just kind of how it works. Also, most players aren’t on campus right now.

I don’t understand the first sentence at all. As far as players being off campus, I get that. But, it’s pretty easy to get in touch with players, no matter where they are. You’re in Barcelona, and we can get in touch with you.

I’m just saying that Woj operates in a level of connectedness that is mindblowing for people not in the NBA. Is Beilein supposed to tell his players before he tells the Cavaliers? How long after Beilein tells the Cavaliers does Woj know? 30 seconds?

I think the presumption is that Beilein should let his players/staff know that it’s a possibility during the interview process if he was legitimately willing to take any NBA offer thrown at him.

Yeah, I understand this sentiment. But, if you’re older and were around from the late 90’s to the late 00’s…you just appreciate the time you had - 12 years of being a top 15 program (well, like 10 years and the first rebuild year/1 bad injury year). And now the program is on as solid of a foundation as it has been on with (hopefully) some good options to replace a legend.

So, I definitely wish Beilein nothing but success and happiness. Watching the final four runs, BT Tourney runs, and competing for a BT regular season championship has been amazing to watch and experience.

Why? This developed so fast, it doesn’t really matter.

Based on how Gilbert played the Griffin firing/Altman hiring and some reporting that Altman was in Denver doing interviews this weekend, I think it’s extremely plausible that Gilbert took the reins on this and Beilein himself didn’t realize how quickly it was going to go.

I’m sure it mattered to everyone who JB promised he would coach their entire college career, and the people that he employs.

I think people are gonna realize fast how great we had it. Phenomenal tournament coach and had a program with players that never got into off the court trouble. Guy was perfect for Michigan.

I guess Gus Johnson is going to have to find a new way to fill airtime for all of our games now that he can no longer mention that Charles Matthews was a Kentucky Transfer, Jordan Poole has “Swagger,” and Beilein is “The Professor.” Triple Wammy lol

How do you know he promised them that? He has a reputation for not over-promising. I doubt he ever promised anybody that.

Ain’t gonna lie. This kills. Michigan basketball has been a life support system for me for twelve years. I will probably need to see a shrink and rebuild my whole emotional world going forward. Don’t even know if I will be able to follow with any enthusiasm. Only half kidding.

This program has been damn special to me. It gave me and diehard Michigan fans sanity and hope while the football program was a disgrace during the 2009-2016 time period.

It is gonna be hard for it to be the same.
