Cleveland Cavaliers hire John Beilein

I don’t know. I have heard several people mentioning it. Is it a serious possibility?

Generally speaking I would imagine that you would only name a court after someone if they were at a specific place for a very long time and retired at that place. Just my impression. But yes, I think getting a court named after you is a huge deal. Bigger than getting your jersey retired.

I agree JB would not care about it…

And I would say won a national title… Especially at a school like Michigan.

Whether or not it was perceived as a good or bad idea by any side seems irrelevant to me. He left us for something else. Period. I do not hold it against him at all, however.

Where can I sign up for the John Beilein and PJ Fleck show?

That seems about right to me.

It’s like buying your ex-girlfriend a house after she dumps you for another man. To name the court after Beilein would represent masochism. At least Ellerbe had to be told to leave. He was a man who wanted to be here. I would sooner name the court after Ellerbe.

Sophomore year of Stauskas was incredible. Him being so good that he left after two years also directly resulted in the missed recruiting cycle that followed and the two year down stretch. JB recruited four year players that rarely even ended up staying four years and in a weird way that worked against him the same way one and dones could. I’m still annoyed that MSU got two years out of Miles Bridges and Michigan got one year of real playing time for DJ Wilson

That’s because Beilein was honest with his players. He helped them get honest feedback and let them make a decision. Izzo trashes his players every chance he gets publicly, so no doubt behind the scenes he is telling them they aren’t ready. It benefits him to get guys to stick around longer than they should, so he’s relentless trying to make that happen. It’s no different than how he handles the refs every single game.

The places I’ve heard thrown around for Beilein (Notre Dame, NW, Indiana, Minnesota, even Texas) I feel all make sense. You can argue you have a good sense of what all their current coaches bring to the table and you can’t say JB wouldn’t be a huge upgrade over them and the way they are currently trending.

Take the Minnesota suggestion for instance. I mean…what is their ceiling under Pitino? JB would have to raise that ceiling and I get the argument that he may not be there long, but he would set the next guy up for success.

Obviously we won’t know until it becomes official but does JB really want to start over somewhere at 67 years old? The NBA felt like his swan song before he called it quits. I could see him go into some advisory role somewhere if he wanted to stay involved. Always felt like he’d make a great scout (not sure he’s interested). Regardless he will have some options whatever path he decides to go.

I mean, he signed a 5 year contract 9 months ago, right?

Sure. I could also trace back questions to his retirement 6 or 7 years ago. He’s coached 40 years. He sounded frustrated by the college game when he left, obviously things aren’t better now. Unless he gets a perfect situation does he really want to go through a rebuild at this age? My guess was he would have regretted not giving the NBA a shot but now that it hasn’t worked out I wouldn’t be surprised to see him call it a career. I wouldn’t be shocked if he did return and coach but I think walking away at this point could make sense for him.

I like the ND idea a lot. We’d simply have to schedule some home-and-homes. But I’m not at all convinced he’s still going to coach. Dylan and BQ both assuming it would happen seems like pretty reasonable speculation since they have a personal sense of the guy, but he seems very location-specific and did say it was going to be his last job. Then again he said that about Michigan after the Pistons flirtation as well.

Man, looking back, it would have been nice to at least have him there. I’m struggling to find reasons to watch Pistons games these days.

Yep. Izzo’s won a lot of games but I don’t think he’s a good person.

I guess I better start booking rooms for the next few Final Fours.

Love how you responded to the initial message but didn’t read any of the conversation.

Q: Good to have you back in studio, Coach Beilein. How was the lawn mowing this summer?

A: I think PJ would say the lawn mowing was elite.

Yeah, sign me up too.

Honestly think Minnesota is sort of a sleeping giant. Giant is probably too strong of a term but that could be a very strong program with the ridiculous amount of talent the state of Minnesota is now produces and they have no instate competition for it.

There is a rumor that Jay Wright may consider Knicks. Another opening that Beilein can fit in.
