BTT 2021: Michigan vs. Maryland Open Thread

Looks like the outside perception is that people are blaming it entirely on Juwan. Seems weird to me that there isn’t any national discussion of how disrespectful chirping about the coaching box and then screaming “DON’T TALK TO ME! DON’T EVER TALK TO ME!” is.

That’s the problem with only Juwan getting tossed. I know I’m biased but I really struggle to understand the different treatment of the two.

I wonder why that is…

I will be the first to say that its because he was the one that was thrown out and nothing more

im just happy that wasn’t MSU. those games are way too emotionally draining for a hungover friday 1130am tipoff

Maybe it’s because only one of them got tossed, and only one of them seemingly had to be held back? Going solely by the video, Coach Howard looks to be the aggressor.

To insinuate that there’s an ulterior motive, without any evidence, is unfair to all involved.

Peep the 27 second mark and then talk to me again.

Turgeon was definitely just minding his own business and Juwan got heated for no reason

One coach escalated that from words to hold backs and it sure wasn’t Juwan

Actual game type game stuff:

BJJ’s +/- in 10 minutes of game time was +9. Davis’ was -1 in 13 minutes. +/- can be a garbage stat, but I think it tells a story here. I love Davis, and he’s the clearly right primary backup 5 in many games (e.g., if we get Purdue next … which we’re not going to), but MD is absolutely a BJJ game.

In addition to all the points and assists, Smith had 5 boards, 2 steals, no fouls and no turnovers. He was +23 in +/- (lol).

Eli had the loudest single digit scoring game (he somehow only scored 9) in the history of all things ever. (EDIT: No, he had 16 – I’m not bright).

I think Turgeon storming at Juwan without any instigation is the worst part. Juwan at least had a fair reason to do it - because Turgeon did it. Turgeon’s reasoning was literally that Juwan was talking to him and that he felt disrespected because of it.

Pretty sure Eli had 16? But will agree with the “quiet” part. Started cold, finished hot.

You’re right - got confused with +/-. Will fix.

Eli scored 16- 2 off the lead (Mike Smith of course). He had a very loud game after air balling a 3 and barely catching rim on the next. He finished 4-8 from 3, which was HUGE because MD was playing him as a non-shooter after he missed his first 3 3s.

Otherwise, I totally agree with you.

Also the camera angle hiding Turgeon. Also Juwan’s persona. Also his race. Also the Michigan factor. Any of these could potentially be part of why he’s being blamed more than Turgeon for different people.

I’m biased obviously, but even trying to be objective, I think this is clearly more on Turgeon for starting it than Juwan for reacting, so IMO there’s a lot more reasons than just “he was the one who was ejected.”

It was a weird situation. 1) It looked to me like Juwan was accusing somebody of something. 2) Morsel went over to the assistant coach. 3) the assistant coach and Morsel stormed toward Juwan right after Morsel communicated something to the assistant.

I suspect it had something to do with some mischief on Morsel’s part. Not sure.

wait, people are team turgeon here? i assumed it would be like 85% pro juwan.

Oh I’m talking about the public perception - Twitter, Reddit etc… not on here.

So you cant fathom that there are people out there that think Juwan might be at fault? and youre immediate reaction is to assume its racially motivated?

yea i understood. still…

who would ever be turgeon over juwan in any situation ever

A bit far fetched, but if Turgeon mentioned something about the M banners coming down, then he was pouring salt to an open wound, with the Fab 5 banners, and Juwan responded.

I’m not in a position to say what came into it, but those thoughts did cross my mind. There’s an article on ESPN how security has been harassing Patrick Ewing, of all people, at MSG.

I do think Juwan will always get much less rope than most of his colleagues for whatever reason and the fact that he is a former NBA player or is newer to coaching are probably not the reasons.
