BTT 2021: Michigan vs. Maryland Open Thread

From Juwan’s account, he was just accusing the ball of being off Maryland (which we all thought), and was walking to that end to be heard, esp since he had a mask on.

This video is so blurry that I can’t see whatever it is I’m supposed to be looking at. The camera starts by focusing on Coach Howard and then following him as he appears to approach the Maryland bench, and the commentators are talking about how Howard was ejected.

I’m not saying that Turgeon didn’t instigate it, but I think there are plenty of reasons for people to pin most of the blame on Howard beyond relative melanin levels, especially if they’re just getting a quick impression and not digging deeply into it.

ETA: To be clear, I’m not blaming Howard. I’m just not immediately going to cast aspersions on anyone who does.

I don’t know about that: all that “well y’know we complained about them three times to the league office” hall monitor type stuff plays very well with recruits.

Howard clearly overreacted but Turgeon acted like he was blameless when he clearly wasn’t. And all the cut ups of the incident only show Howard freaking out but you can’t see what led up to it.

to be honest, I’d rather have a combustible coach, than a coach who is afraid of his own shadow. Who remembers Chaney against Fisher in the 1992 NCAA?

I never said I can’t fathom it - as I said, I can fathom a multitude of reasons why people would think that. I’m pretty sure if both coaches were ejected - Juwan would still be the main guy who is talked about.

As for race - race is ALWAYS a factor in public perception. Just like camera angles are ALWAYS a factor in basketball. Just like someone’s history is ALWAYS a factor. I’m never going to say that race is the clear reason for something that can be up to interpretation (aka playing the race card), but you can’t deny that in a large population, race will always play a role in how we perceive people.

Again, different people have different motivations. Some will read that Howard was ejected like you said and assume he was at fault, some might not have seen that Turgeon was charging at Howard because of the camera angle. Some might not like Howard because of his NBA background. Some might have racial motives (even though I tend to believe that that proportion of people is not very large). These are just some of the the reasons I can indeed fathom why Juwan is being seen as at fault, even though when I try my best to be objective, I tend to think that he isn’t.

This is the Lebowski bowling scene, but with Walter and Smoky’s roles mixed up in various ways.

And we do move on to the next round robin.

You kind of touched on it a little bit but Juwan is always going to be a bigger headline grabber than Mark Turgeon

Yes, that is probably the biggest reason out of all I would imagine.

I would definitely not go with him being racist. I would go with Juwan taking players out of his backyard.

I think Howard should have just laughed in his face. I loved that he stood there and looked at his feet like “I’m not moving” when Turg apparently complained he was out of the box. When Turg flipped out he should have just laughed.at him. They were up 10.

Per the mgoblog gamer, Turgeon didn’t even get a single technical, the Maryland bench did. If so…wow.

Juwan admitted to overreacting, right?

Definitely don’t believe that Turgeon is racist or that his actions were anything close to racially motivated.

If I had to guess, it’s that there might be a subconscious pushback amongst coaches against Howard due to a perceived persona of “NBA Superstar who comes into the B1G, dominates everyone within his first two years, and thinks he can do whatever he wants on the court.” I think that’s why Turgeon felt threatened and reacted the way he did.

To be fair, Juwan got ejected and Turgeon didn’t, so it’s easy for outsiders to assume he was instigator. But why he alone got ejected is the question.

Yeah, as @Dcleary_12 said that’s definitely a big factor.

I think he probably got ejected just because the refs didn’t catch Turgeon charging at Juwan, and instead keyed in on how Juwan reacted. I think it’s a thing in the NFL where they will penalize the second guy for reacting rather than the first guy for instigating, and this was probably what happened here.

I still think Turgeon’s press conference and his words were really hurtful. He said “I do things the right way”. What is that suppose to mean ?.. Michigan/Juwan doesn’t ? And clearly the “I’ve got 34 years in this business” was directed at Juwan’s success on the court and in recruiting.

I’m very upset by the things Turgeon said in the press conference.

I though Juwan was more truthful, he started complaining about my feet out the box and I don’t blame Juwan for talking back to that.
