BTT 2021: Michigan vs. Maryland Open Thread

Mike Smith bailed us out with a fair amount of one-on-one basketball. Quite a few stagnant possessions and at times the defense looked as it did in December. Maybe scuffling is too strong a word for you, but would you say you’ve seen our A game lately for a full game? I would not. Injuries quite possibly a factor, and maybe fatigue. Dickinson is certainly scuffling, I’d say. Careless fouls.

That’s the best guess I’ve seen so far. Likely pretty close to what happened.

I mean, I’m biased, and Franz doesn’t have a history of dirty play, but intent is often in the eye of the beholder. If Brad Davison had hit him the same way, I’d probably assume it was intentional.

Apparently Turgeon has complained to League officials before about Juwan.

Seems ridiculous and short sighted. Probably still peed off over Dickinson torching them earlier in season.

no doubt. to be fair, I’d choose sawgrass over Indianapolis Indiana every day of the week and twice on sundays

Some musings here… would this be an issue any other year? LIke, does lack of fans make such "comments’ easier to hear–or can benches typically hear eachother in a normal season?

They ALL chirp at the officials! :rofl:Does Turgeon have a problem with Tom Izzo.

Turgeon’s not gonna “take it anymore?” Come on man. 3-0 buddy!

Intent is in the eye of the beholder sometimes sure. But on that particular play I don’t see how anyone could see intent. It was a contest at the rim

Very clear that Turgeon starts storming at Howard, saying a lot more than “don’t talk to me,” which he claims is the only thing he says.

Does he not know that there’s video footage that can disprove his lie?

Everyone should have a problem with Tom Izzo.

I mean a player playing well isn’t bailing anything out. Maryland overhelps and is bad at defending ball screens, so Mike took advantage. That’s a player playing well. Does every player need to be playing well in order for it to count as a good win? I’ve just seen tons of people insinuate we aren’t playing well or “playing complete games” and I’m just not sure what is needed to accomplish that? Just way too nitpicky for me. A few stagnant possessions over one college basketball game is to be expected. Baylor barely beat KSU last night. Illinois barely beat tons of teams recently. Gonzaga was down 10 at half to BYU. That’s just college basketball.

Dickinson, definitely not playing well, I’ll give you that. But I bet in the tourney he has a big game or two when he’s been less scouted.

I think that performance gets us to the sweet 16, I agree we better play better to win in the second weekend if we want to keep going, but that was pretty perfect for an opening game against an opponent who was used to playing in the space.

We definitely locked up a #1 seed today and very probably the #3 overall.

Fair comment. Turgeon can go fork himself, but I still think Juwan needs to keep his own composure. (Unless it was a stunt in which case fine, Juwan I trust you)

Some one-on-one perimeter ball is something that we definitely needed though. We’re already a very good team ball movement wise, and so I don’t mind seeing that Smith is able to get his.

Definitely the #1 seed - but if we lose next game and Illinois wins the BTT, I have to say they probably deserve #3 overall based on play in the last few weeks.

Still amazed that Morsell was allowed to come up like that and not be ejected immediately

“Fran & Turg aren’t fans of it”… can we get a bulletin board quote here? And how about the way Izzo chirps at the refs?

IF Coach Howard is “chirping” at the opposing coaches, then that does need to go away. But I find this to be highly situational chirping if it’s an issue at all. Fran is a hot-head and Turg…well yeah.

Strongly agree with this take. I thought we began to look like the well-oiled, resourceful, and diverse offense of earlier in the season during that second half. And showed new potential for bench contributions in the game as well. Will be interested to read Dylan’s take and look at some of the game again. . .

And THEN he got off with another warning after shoving Hunter after a made basket.
