Correct me if wrong so far in the big ten transfers have been:
Michigan St: Bess Clark
Ohio St: Giddens Harris Mitchell and During the season lost grandstaff
Michigan: Albrecht Doyle
Purdue: Weatherford
Also a benchwarmer from Purdue transferred. I think thatās it so far.
I donāt think so, but where there is smoke there is fire. Someone on the national board said he heard that if he does decide to transfer itās likely because he wants to go back out west. That and Michiganās scholarship + Simpson make me not confident Michigan would be a player.
Crazier things have happened, though, and we are due.
edit:
A Duke fan on the national board just gave me an āoverā 50% chance he transfers. Obviously just speculation at this point but itās worth mentioning.
Regarding X, he obviously has a lot of potential but it will be his first year. He might not be ready to contribute. He probably will be ready but I would also understand if he was not ready because it is a big jump from high school to the big tenā¦The optimistic side of me believes these question marks will be answered primarily because Walton and Irvin were not groomed to execute the high pick and roll because that was falling supposed to fall upon Caris and Spike.
So, for OSU, is that a good thing or a bad thing?
If guys are slotted to play point guard, then that is depth at the position. Wether it is good depth or not is debatable.
Speaking of poor pg depth. If Thornton left, Dukeās pg depth would be:
Frank Jackson, freshman
If Allen comes back, he can handle the ball. Duke will have a talented roster, but they will truly be living on the edge with respect to primary ball handler depth.
If thereās no playing time to take, then I guess we already had depth? And you donāt understand how Simpson taking Dakichās minutes plus a few from Walton is a possible improvement?
You are arguing just to argue or to lash out, or missing some obvious stuff here.
@MaxBielfeldt: āPSA to all college coaches. If you automatically want at least 5-10 more wins next year, @SpikeAlbrecht is on the market.ā
I forgot to add Lyle to that list as it was put at around the early signing period and Lyle signed later, so itās not quite as bad as it sounded at first (considering Lyle is the shining star of that class).
Here is Ohio St.'s top 10 players in terms of minutes per game:
Marc Loving
Keita Bates-Diop
JaeāSean Tate
JaQuan Lyle
Kam Williams
Trevor Thompson - Declaring for NBA draft
Austin Grandstaff - Transferred
Daniel Giddens - Transferring
A.J. Harris - Rumored to be transferring
Mickey Mitchell - Transferring
So Ohio St. will return itās top 5 (6 if Thompson stays) and bring in a PF in Funderburke that should be able to provide minutes off the bench. The attrition will open up a couple roster spots for late additions to the 2016 class or a 5th year transfer for depth.
Iām not sure itās crippling, but it certainly opens a lot of questions as to what is going on at OSU and how they will handle the depth issue.
Yeah I think weāre on the same page there! Nice discussion pal.
Nowā¦back to roster movement in the B10 haha
So catch me up here: how can we make room to take in a transfer, for 2016-2017? Arent we now āatā the scholarship limit? Is this all based on the speculation of another player transferring, in addition to Ricky?
With Rickyās decision to transfer we have 13 players under scholarship. That puts us at the scholarship limit. We would need other players to transfer to make room for an incoming transfer of our own.
Okay, thanks. Thatās what I thought the situation was. All of this talk of Thornton is pretty wild. If he would be okay with playing the ā2ā/JB okay with playing 2 āpoint guardsā thatād be great.
I agree it is very crazy. Who knows what will happen there. My question to anybody who knows is say another player transfers and we have an open scholarship spot and do not get an incoming transfer, would Spike consider coming back? As you can tell I am having a hard time seeing him leave.
Seems like that question might get answered sooner, rather than later, with how quickly this transfer info is coming out. Iād like to see him stay, but there might be too big of plans for X to give Spike the minutes/role heād like. We might also be reluctant to take a gamble on his hips
I made a point earlier if Walton is your best rebounder which he is you probably donāt want him to sit. That is unless the team really takes care of the boards to the point where Waltonās contributions arenāt immediate. Youāre missing the point that itās a lot of the same guards and people said they need more depth but out of those 3 2 of them are still going to start and who knows about injuries. They definitely need another ball handler preferably an off guard but they donāt have room.
Zak can play the 2. He actually should be playing the 2-3.
That is exactly one of my thoughts, which would be a very smart thing to do depending on how the roster ends up.
Nothing is certain, but weāve had true freshmen starting at point guard three of the last seven seasons, and all three have been quite capable. None quite one-and-done good, but no one even close to a disaster, and Simpson coming out of high school does not suffer terribly by comparison to any of them (Morris, Burke, Walton). Add to that the fact that Simpson will have a lot less pressure on him, since he (hopefully) will not simply be thrown into the deep end and told āHere, youāre the starting point guardā.
