SHUtin’ Hoops
Shoulda taken the over
Turgeon had a clearly better track record at the time of hire than Willard. Turgeon was .600 in conference in Big12 for 4 years and essentially started the WSU run of success (although obviously his success there was eclipsed by recent years).
Willard had a sub .500 record over several years in Big East. Expectations are really inflated right now at UMD.
Although the closest observers might have raised a concern that Turgeon won just one tourney game in his four appearances w aTm. Past as prologue — yikes!
this is extremely Izzo
Or you can start at 15-16 when Willard got SHU rolling and his record is nowhere near the .500 mark.
Here’s a Wikipedia definition of the Big East:
“The Big East Conference is a collegiate athletic conference that competes in NCAA Division I in ten men’s sports and twelve women’s sports. Headquartered in New York City, the eleven full-member schools are primarily located in Northeast and Midwest metropolitan areas.”
Why count only the good stuff?
Seems that’s when he got things on track. Why would you count the stuff prior?
That’s still a very small sample size. One season can still have a big effect.
Using an average is still a poor way to measure team success. Sample size won’t change that. If a team has an average of 40, and was #1 once, you should give extra weight to that season. By using average ranking you are frequently doing the opposite, giving extra weight to their worst season.
It’s almost like you can narrow or widen the scope to fit your argument as you see fit
You guys want to take this offline please? Not sure where this debate is going and no one seems particularly open to the others’ POV. Let’s stick to the topic a bit more.
I even Googled him at some point to make sure I had it right but got distracted and went with the default lol.
To gently steer this back:
Seton Hall is historically a poor program (the last few years are probably the second best multi-season stretch in program history), poorer than nearly anyone else in that conference (possibly absolutely the worst)
I don’t think he’s a wonderful coach and he’s not a bad one, and Maryland’s level of investment in basketball compared to the rest of the B10 probably exceeds that of Seton Hall compared to the rest of the Big East. I think he will continue to produce consistently “pretty good” yet boring teams.
I challenge anyone to name even ONE seton hall coach that moved to the big ten and disappointed!
Amaker? I’m not good w sarcasm.
Yeah I think what’s odd about him is I would’ve thought Maryland would’ve had the $$ to go get somebody they felt matched their own investment in their program. My sense is they have this thing where they really think a lot of their program but they’re not exactly pushing in all their chips.
This is spot on. And to use the BQ/Pitino idea…that’s a move your making if you are trying to be a big time player. Kevin Willard…is not. Might even top out at being a fine hire but for all that Maryland thinks they are they should be (somewhat justifiably given their recruiting base) aiming higher.
I think that’s article Quinn wrote awhile back about their (extremely unsuccessful) pivot to football was interesting - how they sort of disinvested from basketball in the process in a way that upset most of the fanbase.
Like they turned their on campus basketball arena into a football practice facility!
Ugh this annoys me purely bc I don’t want to have to see Barry in green and white
