reddit postgame can’t agree if this is good or bad for Michigan. what is the downside? hurts PSU’s value as a past opponent?

You’re right, that’s DeCourcy.

Can’t possibly think of a way it’s bad for Michigan

We’re competing with PSU for a bubble spot whereas Rutgers is solidly in the field. Definitely a good result IMO

Only downside I could think of is Penn State could’ve played themselves into the top 50 NET and be a Q1 neutral site game in the BTT. That’s a long shot that we’d even play them though.

Plus it solidifies Rutgers Net ranking which we need them to be as high as possible

How the heck would this in any way be bad for Michigan?

-Bubble team neck and neck with Michigan loses
-One of Michigans best wins looks better
-Penn State in no danger of moving up or down in quadrants for either the home or road game

That makes no sense

I agree, the guy replied but he made no sense. Something about BTT seeding. But M hold the tiebreakers over Rutgers.

Maybe suggesting that Michigan should avoid the double bye so they can have a more winnable first game to improve their resume? Either way these teams are so bunched together any advantage is minute AND Michigan probably has to win both games this week to clinch a double bye, and doing so would likely lock them into the bracket.

I could see that argument, but what he said was “I would like for us to have as high a seed as possible in the tournament (preferably a 5 seed). This [result] significantly reduces our chances of that.” I think he’s just a silly goose

2nd best defensive efficiency?

Just running a few simulations it did move Rutgers more into double bye territory. 11-9 would put us as a 9 seed against Illinois :grimacing:. 12-8 would probably move us more into double bye territory as we would own the tie breaker against Rutgers.

So I guess if you are team “not wanting double bye to have more wins” then yes this might not be ideal. Still a lot of games left though!

Correct – wrote about that in the recap.

12-8 probably means Michigan has a double bye.

I think this means a lesser chance to play Rutgers in the 8/9 game but that’s still possible. Iowa seems likely as well depending on how things break.
