Feel like best case for MSU is to have Walker/Fears at PG and not Hoggard/Fears/Walker.
Where is Walker going? Also, isn’t Hauser out of eligibility?

Yeah Hauser is out of eligibility and I don’t see any reason why Hoggard would transfer unless there’s a get closer to home reason like Marble
My assumption is that would depend on how highly they think of Fears.
He’s not I don’t believe.
Y1: 2019 @ Marquette
Y2: 2020 @ MSU (redshirt)
Y2-R: 2021 @ MSU (COVID)
Y3-R: 2022 @ MSU
Y4-R: 2023 @ MSU
Y 5-R COVID: ???
You can’t redshirt twice. I don’t think he ever got a waiver for his redshirt at Marquette.
He didn’t redshirt twice? He redshirted once plus Covid. Am I missing something there?
Yeah, he enrolled early and took a redshirt.
2017-18
Missed majority of senior season following ankle surgery, graduated early and enrolled at Marquette for the spring 2018 semester, during which he redshirted.
Ohh so the year he sat out at MSU wasn’t a redshirt. Got it. Had forgotten he enrolled early
College reference, whatever it’s worth, calls that transfer year his RS, and doesn’t even have 17-18 listed
I guess, but I’ll believe an Izzo freshman PG can easily beat out an entrenched multi-year upperclassmen starter when I see it. I think it’s more likely Walker just decides to move on with his life after 4 years of college ball and you have less of a log jam there.
Hoggard is Izzo’s guy. He’s been behind him for a long time. I can’t see Izzo pushing him out.
Cassius Winston only started 5 games as a freshman behind Tum Tum Lourawls Literally Doesn’t Need to Be Guarded Nairn.
PG | SG | SF | PF | C | |||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Hoggard | 30 | Walker | 30 | Hall | 25 | Booker | 25 | IDK | 40 |
Fears | 10 | Akins | 10 | Akins | 15 | Carr | 15 |
That would be if everyone comes back besides Hauser. Which means there’s gotta be at least 2 more departures I would think. This has 0 minutes for Brooks and Holloman, only 10 for Fears, Akins still a 6th man. Even if Brooks and Holloman are the only other guys that leave I’m unsure how they get enough minutes to keep Walker/Hoggard/Akins/Fears all happy. That’s a scary team though, even though the C spot would still be pretty weak
Interesting… that’s never been the vibe I’ve gotten.
Best for MSU: Walker-Fears-Akins backcourt
Best for rest of us: Hoggard still there.
I don’t know what Hoggard’s recruiting profile was, but I can’t imagine it said anything about his shooting ability, which is obviously his biggest weakness. Seems weird to me that Izzo might be silently hoping for Hoggard to leave seeing as he’s become a decent player. If Izzo wanted more shooting, then why did he recruit a zero-shot wide body PG?
(Not implying that you are saying that’s what Izzo wants, just would find it strange that he would be done with Hoggard.)
There’s no way MSU will have Hoggard, Walker, Fears and Akins on the same roster next year. Their fans seem to think that’s actually possible but it’s insane.
If I were them I’d desperately want Hoggard gone from that group and that suddenly becomes a terrifying backcourt with a 30/30/20 minutes split. But Hoggard would need to be pushed out - he’s not looking to leave on his own and that goes against the entire Izzo MO to push a senior out for a freshman, even if they love Fears.
So the decision basically comes down to: do you want Walker back or not. I would say that should be a no-brainer yes from their side, but if you take Walker back as the first domino, I don’t think it does anything to push Hoggard out, and Fears is in for sure. So that leaves Jaden Akins with a decision to make on if he really wants to play 75% of his minutes at the 3 AGAIN with very limited playmaking opportunities, or if he wants to hit the portal.
My assumption is they’ll let Walker walk to avoid that happening with Akins.
Akins is flying into Greg Kampe’s open arms if this happens
(Kidding I know he’d get high major offers)
I’m surprised people think Walker is coming back for a 5th year. I know some guys do, but I just assumed he’d be done and try his luck in an overseas pro league.
I would have echoed the sentiment that Izzo loves Hoggard. I base that on the fact that he gets so much playing time, he plays good defense, he rebounds, he pushes pace…things Izzo loves. He can’t shoot…but hasn’t stopped him from playing him before.
Hauser is done - played out eligibility.
The players I’m interested to monitor are Sissoko, Hall, and Akins. Hall’s got four full years plus injury issues - he might be ready to move on. Sissoko may see competition and the number of times he gets yelled at and move on. Akins is definitely playing a ton of minutes right now but he isn’t having a huge impact. Does he stay with hopes of being their #1 option? Does he leave because he wants a different role? Does he start showing up on fringe NBA mock drafts?
