Penciling Phil in for next season already I see.

Highly recommend taking the trip to the Palestra if you’re able. All the Purdue fans I talked to had a great time. Doesn’t hurt that they were ranked #1 and won the game I suppose.

It’s an absolutely beautiful old building. You can be in the last row and still right on top of the action. It’s not comfortable and it’d be nice if there was a video monitor, but it’s still an absolute treasure of a building and I will definitely be there if this happens.

I took that from it myself

Any word on Mawot Mag and his injury on Saturday

Maybe you shouldn’t have left so many scholarships unused, Tom. Whose fault is that?

Is playing 30 minutes some sort of high bar?

Impossible to expect 20 year olds to play 30 minutes a night with only 4 TV timeouts plus coaches timeouts per half.

If Hunter can play 30 minutes a night, multiple Spartans should be able to with no issue

lol Izzo continuing to whine about things totally within his control and acting like its some insurmountable hurdle no other team or coach has to deal with. so on brand for him. dude lacks so much self awareness in his attempts to drum up pity.

Regardless of that, I just think people look at depth in the completely wrong way in CBB.

There are rare exceptions where a deep team is extremely dangerous, but having really good “best” players is still by far the most important thing.

The problem isn’t that Hauser doesn’t have a better backup, the problem is that Hauser is your “best player” who plays 30 mpg.

I mean sure, but how many coaches realistically have 5-6 players they want to play 30+ mpg? There are only so many really good players out there. So in the event you don’t have 5 players that you want to play 30+ mpg, you’d like to have a quality bench where there isn’t a huge dropoff from your mediocre starter to your crummy bench.

I’d say you need 3 guys who you want to play for the whole game. If those guys are good, you are going to be fine.

I can’t think of a recent Big Ten team that really had their bench as a differentiator and it was their dept that made them a competitor.

Michigan State hasn’t had an All-Big Ten guy for a few years and that’s the problem. Not the bench. Last year’s team was deep, this year’s team wasn’t. They are basically the same team.

yeah, it’s probably gonna be really annoying when their 2023 recruiting class breathes new life into the program

Or immensely amusing when Booker is stuck third string behind Sissoko and Kohler and Izzo can’t go three minutes without yanking the frosh that actually do play. But they’ll be possibly great in two years when the ones who stay blossom into classic MSU upperclassmen.

Think this is a notable downgrade for a defense that had been so so good.

Yup. It’s more minutes for Aundre Hyatt who’s gotten taken out multiple times because his defense hasn’t been good enough. And it’s more minutes for Oskar Palmquist or Dean Reiber and the ideal version of those guys is that they hit two 3 pointers to offset their lack of defense.

Rutgers did score 43 points in the second half against MSU to come back without Mag. Derek Simpson played a lot in that second half so maybe the adjustment is putting an extra capable ballhandler on the floor with Mulcahy and McConnell to give some different looks offensively. No question the defense is significantly worse though.

I only watched probably the last quarter of the MSU game, but I feel like I stopped and thought “oh god why is Cam Spencer guarding this guy” more than I have watching any other Rutgers game.
