Big Ten Basketball 2021-22 Discussion

I was just thinking about how wild it will be when Izzo breaks out his 11-man rotation. Which walk-on gets that coveted 11th spot and comes in as soon as Izzo gets furious with Hoggard for a turnover or Hall for a failed boxout?

For all the negative talk I’ve heard about UM’s current roster situation, one thing is clear. It could be a whole lot worse

I don’t know about a WHOLE lot…maybe a little bit

Stephen still have eligibility?

Idk man I mean they don’t even have a center right now… Plus their roster doesn’t have a ton to like on it. We at least have a center/an AA caliber player, and a coach that has had a lot of success getting what he needs in the portal. Izzo hasn’t exactly had a propensity for working the portal.

I’d say the best thing MSU has going for them is that they at least know Christie’s decision, whereas we technically don’t know Caleb or Moussa’s.

kind of gives me hope that our guys will announce their intentions sooner than later

I hope so too. But I think either way that Juwan has an idea. Plus like we’ve talked about, Juwan is able to get in on portal guys fast when he does find someone he wants/needs. And we have a fantastic situation to offer.

Yeah, but if reports are to be believed it seems like this may not have been much of a decision for Christie.

Keon Coleman SZN

Adjusted Offensive Efficiency is better without Christie? I did not expect that.

again huge caveats with the RosterCast tool. It’s just for fun and does not take 75% of real basketball into account

It shouldn’t be surprising based on stats since Christie was inefficient and isn’t accurate. However, MSU lost an important player because a sophomore Christie is better than Akins and Brooks. MSU needs both to make a leap to cover for Christie’s loss but they have a huge hole at C.

I actually think their hole at wing is bigger than center. They lose Brown and Christie and replace them with…Akins and Brooks? Hall is a 4 for me.

At least at center they have bodies with Sissoko, Hauser, and Kohler.

I don’t think their roster is awful, it’s just weirdly small

Walker 33 Hoggard 7
Hoggard 26 Akins 14
Akins 19 Brooks 21
Hall 33 Hauser 7
Izzo’s Pu Pu Platter 40

They need another wing, you’re right, but that lineup fields three proven decent to better than decent big ten starters, two Top 50 recruits as sophomores coming into their own, and whatever is happening at center. It’s not going to win the Final 4 but it’s not inconceivable it falls right and challenges for Big.

It’s a lot different if max junior comes back, of course.

Yeah, I guess having three guards let’s Izzo run the floor all the time too. But defense and rebounding at their standards will be a challenge. I am not sold on Brooks, but I like the three guards each in their own way.

Walker-Hoggard-Akins is a pretty good backcourt IMO. I’m high on Akins. But I don’t know if his major breakout is this year or 2023-24. I think MSU has a solid floor, but not a very high ceiling unless Kohler has something close to HD’s freshman season.

And a large part of Hunter’s success his freshman year was Franz/Livers/Chaundee and I don’t think Walker/Hoggard/Aiken’s are quite that.

I would assume that Hall starts at the 3.
