I think it’s fair to expect a top-4 finish and 25+ wins for Indiana this year. The B1G has lost a ton of talent and Indiana is loading up.

Torvik has them 12th overall and 2nd in the B1G following this commitment.

I read on another board that Minnesota is the only school he could pick and be immediately eligible. I don’t know what rule that is referencing though.

Presumably just that he’d need a waiver since he transferred already and if you’re moving home for family issues it’s easier to get a waiver, and they’re the only D1 school in Minnesota

I think this is a really nice fit for both parties

Yes, agreed.

It’s the “I Grew Up in Minnesota and Can Sing the Rouser Rule”.

IU is full unless TJD leaves or someone else transfers. Osu could definitely use him since they’re depending on 3 freshman at guard

there are those Geronimo rumors. OSU has a spot though

You would have been right in asserting Minnesota was the only D1 school in basketball in Minnesota through the end of last season. However, starting with the 2021-22 season, University of St. Thomas - the Tommies from St. Paul - are moving up to D1 from D3, and will be competing in basketball as a member of the Summit League (UND, NDSU, Oral Roberts…)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St.Thomas(Minnesota)_Tommies

Previously, St. Thomas was part of the D3 MIAC League, but were expelled in 2019 for concerns with “athletic comparative parity.” As Sports Illustrated put it, “St. Thomas is just too good at sports for the rest of the MIAC.” Normally the route to D1 from D3 is made through a minimum 12 year stay in D2, but St. Thomas was granted a waiver to make the jump immediately.

So, if it’s a move home that allowed Dawson Garcia to get a transfer waiver without sitting out, theoretically Dawson could have also transferred to D1 St. Thomas and still be immediately eligible. Of course Minnesota’s program is probably a bit more fitting to his talent level.

For some extremely entertaining banter, go to the DIII.com Message Board and go through the basketball and football threads for the MIAC about three years ago. Some strong feelings there.

Some good friends of mine have a son who plays soccer for St. Thomas. He stuck around for his fifth year to play D1. Pretty wild to make that leap and all of the NCAA rules on what requirements there are for the sports teams during the transition. But cool for him that he got signed to play D3 and now gets to say he played D1.

Basically they can’t offer scholarships to any existing players and the total number of scholarships allowed gradually increase over multiple seasons until they can get the full allotment like the rest of D1.

Wait why can’t they give scholarships to existing players? That sucks!

Yeah what do those guys have to do? Transfer to a D3?

Family hardship/medical waiver.

Could you “transfer” in and get the D1 scholarship? I bet all the credits would transfer
