Just got two FutureCasts to IU…starting to feel some consternation about Woodson building a monster
Mark this down as a future freezing cold take, but I think it’ll be fun to hate them again.
Question - who would a resurgent IU hurt the most? Can Michigan, MSU, OSU and IU all be good at the same time?
I never stopped.
It was easy with guys like Crean and Miller at the helm.
They were all really good in 2013. All 4 were ranked in the top 10. All 4 made it at least to the Sweet 16. I think there is room for 4 programs to be really good in basketball at the same time.
It will hurt Michigan the most by far. In fact they will win the B1G next year and Michigan will finish last
As Beilein once said, somebody ascending in the league is directly related to somebody else falling back. Wisconsin looks set for that dropoff for sure. Illinois hasn’t sustained anything. Holtmann hasn’t established that his OSU teams are going to be consistently great. So I’d say there’s definitely room.
Miller I had, like, aesthetic objections to. But they were such a disaster that I didn’t bother hating them. Crean played fun basketball. It’s been a while since they’ve really drawn my ire.
CBB is interesting bc you really can play enough of a noncon schedule to end up not necessarily displacing somebody else in the league. But, yeah, really only room for ~30 teams at the top of D1. After that, bad luck can pretty easily snatch a bid and then your momentum starts going the other way.
Yes, and would be a big boost for the conference to have a program with their crazy historical success be, like, good. I don’t mind this even if I hate it.
IMO I have plenty enough fun when they are not good. I can do without them and divert all my hate into MSU, OSU and the flavor of the year (last year Illinois).
If we’re all agreed we want Michigan at the top of the B1G, who do we all want filling out the rest of the top 5? I’m fine with tanking OSU esp. bc good lord they don’t deserve anymore happiness than they’ve already got. Wisconsin is an affront to the the basketball gods. So the rest I’d say something like:
- Purdue
- Indiana
- Iowa
- Michigan State
State being good but consistently worse than us seems like peak funny. The rest of the teams I left out I either can’t stand already when they’re bad or would be totally indifferent to. I guess Illinois is 6th? They’ve demonstrated they can’t handle success gracefully.
EDIT: totally forgot Maryland is a thing. Turgeon isn’t really up to being a quality nemesis I suspect.
I like it when Indiana stinks. I can’t really explain it but that’s just what I feel in my gut
this is a twist on the Enmity List. I would like the following every year
1. Michigan
2-11. Don't care
12. Wisconsin until Greg Gard is fired
13. OSU
14. MSU
Iowa? I guess that’d be fine but there’s like a 0% chance they fulfill that role. Out of the more realistic choices I’m fine with Illinois or Wisconsin
Enmity List adjacent. I think you have to respect a quality heel. Which probably means I need to throw Illinois in there. They got to me.
Iowa can’t consistently be a top 5 team in the B1G?
not under Fran
As in be a top 5 performing program over an 5-10 year period of time? No I don’t think so. Have they ever been? At best they’ve been 5th over the last 8 and it’s been the best 8 years they’ve had since the late 90s-early 80s. And right now we don’t really have a reason to think it’s something that they will maintain
I guess ‘can’t’ is the word to debate here and a hard one for me to say it’s impossible
Also I just remembered Maryland. I’d take a top 5 of them, UM, MSU, IU, and Purdue. You got two state rivalries, 4 historic programs, then the kind of fun outsider
